- Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a school safety officer injured on Corporal Kennedy St. in Queens, a double stabbing on Madison St. and Seneca Ave. in Queens, and a stolen DHL truck in the area of North Henry St. in Brooklyn.
- A family-owned hardware store at Bergen St. and Flatbush Ave. has been open since the 1940s, but they now find themselves in possession of approximately $100 million worth of development rights. That's a lot of two-penny nails.
- A 17-year-old suspect in the killings and attempted murder of several teenagers in a Newark schoolyard last year pleaded not guilty in court yesterday.
- Evidence in the trial of Nixzmary Brown's stepfather showed that the murdered girl was absent 28 days, or three quarters of the school year to that point, before her death.
- Prospective teachers in New York City schools will now have to submit an essay demonstrating their ability to read and write effectively before being considered for a job.
- Operation Secret Rider, meant to nab taxi drivers in violation of rules against cell phone use while driving, resulted in very few summonses being issued.
- A contractor for Con Ed was electrocuted this afternoon at one of the company's substations in Queens. A company spokesperson confirmed his death.
