200802dogface.jpgREADING: Jeff Garigliano, Condé Nast Portfolio senior-editor turned author, will be reading from his debut novel titled Dogface. The story follows a rebellious 14-year-old boy who, like so many before him, gets sent off to a camp that specializes in "whipping mixed-up teens back into shape".

EVENT: The Secret Science Club is back tonight with the President of New York’s Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Dr. Bruce Stillman. An expert on cancer and disease research, he'll answer questions like, "where will the latest discoveries in genetics take us?" and "will it be possible to live with cancer one day?" The club invites you to "groove to science-inspired tunes and self-replicating bio-video" before and after the lecture, and be sure to stick around for the Q&A, while you knock back the cocktail of the night: the Double (Make That a Triple) Helix.

8pm // Union Hall [702 Union St] // Free

THEATER: The Maddening Truth concerns Martha Gellhorn, known to some only as the gorgeous third wife of Ernest Hemingway, a claim to fame she deeply resented: "The very idea that being married to him was the most important action of my life is enough to make me want to scream. How can I lay this bloody ghost?" And despite Hemingway’s condescending claim that Gellhorn knew “everything about humanity but nothing about human beings”, her six decades of work as a war correspondent, as well as her prose fiction, reveal a deep understanding of the way armed conflict ruins individuals. The Keen Company’s play takes place in 1970s London, when Gellhorn was set upon by ambitious young writers hungry for a piece of her, and depicts her “desperate attempt to fulfill her lifelong ambition: to write a luminous novel.” Saviana Stanescu calls The Maddening Truth an “insightful and witty glimpse into Gellhorn's life and personality.” – John Del Signore
