An estimated three million people assembled along Broadway during yesterday's ticker tape parade to celebrate the Giants' 17-14 Super Bowl XLII win over the New England Patriots.
After the many floats with Giants players (and cars with some dignitaries, like Governor Spitzer, Senator Chuck Schumer, and Assembly Leader Sheldon Silver) rolled up the Canyon of Heroes, Mayor Bloomberg presented the team with keys to the city. When David Tyree, whose amazing catch in the final minutes of the game helped the Giants to victory, received his key, people cheered loudly and the Mayor said, "He showed he could use his head." (BTW - "TYREE1" is totally available for the NY State DMV's new Super Bowl Champ license plate!)
During his remarks, Super Bowl MVP quarterback Eli Manning said, "This is the greatest city in the world. And now it's the greatest football city in the world." And Michael Strahan trash talked to the Patriots at his turn at the lectern, "We stomped you out!" - even stomping with the whole team, making us worry about the platform they were on.
A devoted fan who traveled from NJ to Arizona to see them play in the Super Bowl was at the parade; Lori Pletenik told the NY Times, "I’ve been to Mardi Gras, New Year’s Eve in Times Square and Carnivale in Rio, and this beats them all." Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe basically had the same reaction, "[This] reminds me what it must have been like when the legions returned to ancient Rome."
Naturally, with 3 million people and spirits running high, there were some arrests in the chaos. Some rowdy fans jumped on top of cars and buses, including a NYPD cruise disguised as a yellow cab. Newsday has the hilarious/depressing footage.

Tyree shoulda' been MVP.
That video just made me hate Giants fans even more...
Actions by idiots like those caught on videotape should be severely punished. There is absolutely no excuse for people to be acting like this. Despicable.
I mean, really, this is the way you celebrate?!?! Jackasses.
That Prius belonging to the Department of Buildings got pretty well trashed.
proofreadddddd.
tyree needed manning to scramble out of that sack to catch it. The real MVP was the D-line. They were amazing.
Still failing to see how this is payback for the Yankee - Red Sox rivalry. For starters, the Yankees and Red Sox are traditional rivals dating back almost 100 years. The Giants and Patriots are not rivals. The Jets and Patriots are rivals. So to buy into this you really have to look at the rivalry between the cities which frankly hardly exists outside of sports anymore. Furthermore, while I am a Giants fan and love that they won the Super Bowl, I took much more delight in dispatching the Dallas Cowboys to the off season. I hate the Cowboys. Yeah, it was nice sticking it to Belichick over the videotape incident but I don't hate the Patriots the way Jets fans do. And really, one game in Arizona is hardly the epic collapse of 4 straight ALCS games - the last two of which were in Yankee Stadium. That's humiliating. Football has a saying of "Any given Sunday". What's the baseball equivalent of the 2004 ALCS? Never before in the history of the sport and probably never again in your lifetime?
boston has been at the heel of NY for many years. In the last half decade they changed that and went apeshit on their glory and now the tides have turned. I've never seen so many pundits and politicians sticking it to boston instead of edifying the Giants. It's all payback for how boston's acted in the last couple of years. I mean they were all "yankees suck" when they won the first superbowl. That didn't make any sense.
Well, at least it was a well-represented mix of whites, blacks and Latinos acting like human garbage. Whoever's job it was to wrangle up a few Asians to complete the PC quintet should be ashamed of themselves, though. And I had my thesis all planned out, too. Damn.
#3, You CLEARLY don't understand what their justification.
A football team from their metropolitan area, whom they have no actual connection to, won a game over a team from another metroploitan area.
Clearly, this is reason to jump on and smash cars.
Also, they are douchebags.
ummm...unneccessary "what'.
nevermind.
I am also a douchebag.
it's funny they say 3 milliion people went to the parade cause they only let in probably about 800,000 into the canyon of heroes. THe other 2.2 million were left to scramble around the defensive police perimeter and were not able to watch jack shit. The police tactic used is to tell the parade goers that the section is closed off and send them to another section. That section is also closed off. The police won't tell you that you can't get in cause that would start a riot. but basically if you weren't camped out at 8 in the morning you weren't gonna feel any confetti on your head.
god I hate football.
Babyhitler, that was my experience. 30 minutes wasted walking around a block, only to end up 50 feet from where we started. Bah!
Oh yeah, and I saw a bunch of douchebags scaling an abandoned garbage truck to stand on the top. Dumbest idea ever.
I just don't get why people think they can destroy the property of others in a situation like this. Douchebag is definitely the word for that class of person.
My favorite moment of the video however was when the cop grabbed the guy who came down off the police van and shoved him up against the van, getting in his face with, "are you crazy?" The scared shitless look on that douchebag's face was priceless. Mr. tough guy until the cops show up. Then when he was let go he tried to play it off like he didn't just crap his pants.
I remember the days when sports fans actually had class.
