Democratic Frontrunner Far From Clear After Super Tuesday
McCain Racks Up Many States

2008_02_delest.jpg
Graphic from CNN

It was an exciting night of Super Tuesday primary returns. In the Democratic contest, Hillary Clinton won eight states, including New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and California, but Obama won twelve - Illinois, Connecticut, Alabama, and Missouri - among them (New Mexico is still undecided as the two candidates are in a tie). The NY Times notes that since there were no decisive victories, "an electoral fight...will unfold for weeks to come." Or, as the Post puts it in more visceral terms, "Neither Clinton nor Obama was able to deliver a knockout punch on a night that had once been expected to crown a winner."

On the Republican side, John McCain had decisive victories, by taking New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Missouri, and California (plus four other states). He said, "Tonight, I think we must get used to the idea that we are the Republican Party front-runner. And I don't really mind it one bit." Mike Huckabee showed strength by winning a number of Southern states, and many believes Mitt Romney, though winning Massachusetts and five other states, lacks momentum.

Check out the full NY Democratic and Republican results and exit polls at CNN. And does anyone know how if there's a way to see results at the congressional level - we're curious how NYC voted! The Politicker does have some info - about Clinton winning Harlem and the Upper West Side - but we're hungry for more. The best we can do is info from CNN - Clinton won Manhattan (50%, to Obama's 44%), Brooklyn (50%, Obama 48%), the Bronx (60%, Obama 38%), Queens (60%, Obama 38%), and Staten Island (61%, Obama 36%).

which of these candidates will repeal the law that denies HIV non citizens from entering the country? probably none of them as this is a non-issue...or would only effect you if it had anything to do with you.

bill clinton promised to repeal this in 1993 but as can be expected, nothing came of that.

I expected Hillary to win New York but I'm a little surprised.

There seemed to be more Obama support in New York lately. I guess his major supporters are teenagers and college students who don't vote. =/

This looks more like a rouges gallery from a bribery or intern shagging scandal instead of people you would want as President.

It amazes me that so many democrats are insisting on picking the one candidate who absolutely guarantees McCain's victory.

I think we're amazed because we're just not used to a good old fashioned election. Voting for the person you want. No scheme, no mess.

I hate that democrats are so divided. A lot of Obama supporters rather not vote at all if he loses. =/ Disappoints me. I would vote for Obama if Hillary doesn't get the nomination. For this election, I rather have a democrat.

omg, i can't begin to tell you how frustrating it is to see democrats intentionally giving the republicans the white house again.

DEMS TOUGH ON EARS

One pontificates,

The other screeches;

Cannot wait until

They're done with speeches.

@4 + 6: You are suggesting voting for Hillary because she can beat McCain and Obama can't, right? I think it's a good strategy in the long run, but it's sad that today Dem's have to vote so defensively rather than for what they really want.

bklyngrrl, we are suggesting that OBAMA can beat mccain while voting for hillary will bring people out to vote against her.

she is despised by a large # of people but somehow she has more delegates & won ny. it is very surprising to me that democrats are shooting themselves in the foot this way.

Zodak, oh, I agree. I voted for Obama yesterday. I don't know who these Dems are that are voting for her (what's up, NY?). I am really excited that Obama won some other states though and still has a chance. I am scared that we are still going to have a Republican in the WH again just because this country takes a LONG time to *get it*. At least it's not like 2004 when Romney would have probably won!

I agree with others, there is so much hate for Senator Clinton. I believe that she can't win the general election. Obama, on the other hand, appeals to Dems, Independents and even some Republicans. He can beat McCain.

He also happens to be the best person for the job (in my humble opinion).

I'm also of the opinion that Hillary is going to be an easier target for republicans in the national, because of kneejerk hatred toward her.

One thing that struck me yesterday is that there area lot of independents who are unable to vote in certain state primaries, such as NY, as i found out to my consternation yesterday.

It made me wonder whether Hillary would have won NY if independents had been allowed, and wonder further whether Obama has done better in states with open primaries.

Anyone know offhand whether California's primary is a closed system?

Clinton can't win the general election. She is a divisive figure. Look how she is alienating people within her own party. I don't see how she helps the Democratic Party grow and become successful.

She sucks.

Just wait if they go into the Convention neck and neck. Ugh... that's going to be nasty.
