More Domino Refinery Eye Candy

Well, candy is in the mouth of the beholder, but here are the actual renderings. As noted yesterday, the proposals for the new residential and retail complex at the Domino Refinery will be presented to the Landmarks Preservation Commission at a public hearing today at 2pm at the Municipal Building (1 Centre Street), 9th Floor North. Brownstoner posted snapshots of the renderings taken last week at a community board meeting, as well as floor plans for the modified refinery, which would feature five floors of residential units on the roof.

So this is what the entire site would look like, night and day, if the 9 residential towers designed by Rafael Viñoly are built on the 11.5 acre site. And today the Post observes that the iconic, illuminated Domino Sugar sign is not part of the "New Domino." (Unlike the refinery, the sign was not landmarked.)

Does anyone remember that fourth of july party that was on top of the factory 4 or 5 years ago? I think a bunch of bands played and Vice sponsored it. That was fun.

Pretty nice looking for yet another knot of cheap glass monstrosities. I'd rather live in the sugar plant.

I like them, very modern and yet they aren't out of touch with the . They're better use of the property, which is an abandoned factory now.

Who's gonna be able to afford to live in these buildings, hmmm?

No one will be able to afford to live there! That's why they're building them.

I was at that Fourth party! Vietnam played, and also that metal-y band from Texas, what was their name? They played "to" the fireworks ... it was incredible. Great party.

These buildings ... I just don't get it. I feel like the developers are really overreaching when it comes to what they are planning in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. So, these multi-million-dollar condos ... what, are people going to take the JMZ to these? I just think it's a lot of wishful thinking on the developers' part.

If you build it, they will come.

That was a great party - the band from Texas was The Secret Machines. That was right before they blow'd up.

The new complex is gross, but there's nothing to be done.

Anybody remember that rash of hooker beheadings along Kent Ave in the late 80s/early 90s? Some change is good, I suppose. But if I ever lose my rent-stabilized lease, I'll be outta there.

I'm even less sure about these renderings. I guess the half-glass/half-brick designs are attempts at respecting "context", but here it just looks like a ordinary glass towers with nasty rashes.

I think Dead Meadow might have also played the party?

I don't know why so many people like these. They look unusually ugly to me. Yuck.

Why aren't there modern glass apartment buildings a la Vancouver? Why does everything new have to be built with brick? Why does everything have to be so uniform and fugly? I really want to know.
