NY Courts Feeling Agreeable, Will Recognize Gay Marriage

gaymarriage.jpgA New York State appellate court ruled that under the federal concept of the "marriage recognition rule," which grants reciprocity to the bond of marriage formed in other states, it will recognize gay marriages solemnized in other states. As one of the largest states in the nation, this is a huge step for proponents of normalizing same-sex marriages. Gay marriages still aren't allowed in New York State, although a young mayor in New Paltz, NY attempted to go forward with that initiative, but marriages performed elsewhere will be granted legal status. It's a bit of legalistic court-leading-the-horse, but gay rights proponents seem pleased.

Christine C. Quinn, the openly gay Speaker of the City Council, applauded the ruling and said that it was a large step forward for the equal treatment of gays in New York State. Opponents of gay marriage in New York State will now be required to get the legislature to pass a law overruling gay marriage in order for homosexual banns to be broken.

State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said that he was unaware of any decision on such matters, but stated that it was his job to defend state agencies, so if he fights the decision, it's only because his arm is being twisted (wink, wink.) Mayor Bloomberg's office also said that it had heard nothing about the appellate court ruling, although he vetoed a council-backed law that would have required companies operating in NYC to recognize same-sex unions because he had to support the laws of the state. In agreement or disagreement, we have to at least admire the appellate court judges for not feigning deafness in the matter of same-sex unions.

I guess I'm naive but I don't see what's the big deal with gay marriage. Just let them get married. >_>

Eh, you have to be over 40 to remember what it was like to be really afraid of gay people.

"guess I'm naive but I don't see what's the big deal with gay marriage."

Because marriage is between a man and a woman.

"Eh, you have to be over 40 to remember what it was like to be really afraid of gay people."

Just because one is against gay marriage does NOT mean they are "afraid" of gay people. Such lazy thinking serves no purpose.

But why is it illegal to solicit gay sex in public restrooms?

I believe in equal rights for ALL. Gay people deserve the priviledge to be married and miserable just as much as straight people.

If a religion doesn't cotton to the idea of gay marriages, then by all means, allow them to not perform them. But, isn't it a violation of church and state, for people to use religion as a reason for not allowing city hall to perform gay marriages?
I say, allow it. Its a big so what, to me. There's supposed to be someone for everyone, so so what.

Man call it something else. Marriage is between a man and a woman. Call it a union or some shit... but ah shit not a marriage, its too weird.

I agree with Karen, religions have the right to discriminate based on sexual orientation, the government does not. Massachusetts is the only state to have realized this.

And can I just say that I hate how people try to justify their discrimination by saying that allowing gay marriage would destroy the sanctity of marriage. Isn't the divorce rate one in two? What's so sacred about that?

blah blah blah. let them marry and then they stfu about it.

what the hell is wrong with this stupid county. If peewee herman can marry his salad in front of his lazy boy (cherry) than anyone should be able to marry anything.

no i am not being sarcastic, i just don't care. and yes i am religious and a christian.

i just don't care though. get married, be happy, relax, and live a good life. i can't be more explicit in my feelings on this matter.

Legalize gay marriage and abolish religion and then move along people, nothing to see here.

this will open people to marry their dogs

and their plants - how disgusting is the thought of someone marrying their azaleas. ew.

I'm gay and I want to also marry my plant, but only the same sex plant as me. How can I tell if an azalea is male or female? I'd hate to end up in a heterosexual plant marriage by mistake. I know some plants have both male and female parts in the same plant and that would just be wrong. I know pecan trees come in male and female, so maybe I better stick with a pecan tree that way I don't end up making a mockery of the religious institute of marriage.

Gay marriage is just a red herring. What gay people really want is the right to gay adultery, which is impossible without gay marriage.

Those people who mention marriages to their dogs and plants are just plain sickos. But I will have to do further research about this graphic subject on the internet.

Dual-sex plants are a freak of nature and should be stomped on. Or maybe they're a fact of nature? Aw damn, now my entire world view is totally wrecked. I'll probably wind up falling in love with a groundhog now.

Oh, full faith and credit, you sly bastard.

Sometimes New York actually gives me a reason to be proud. I will enjoy it, since it happens so rarely.

All this chatter about bizarre sex is utter nonesense. It's imaginable that Martians will steal the Bank of America, or that a Japanese monster will destroy Wall Street, but horror films cannot possibly be the basis for sound public policy.

Gay people have been forming committed relationships for years and years. And the failure to acknowledge this fact has been very costly.

The fact that there was no legal relationship between me and my late lover means that something like half a million bucks in medical expenses were written off by New York Hospital. Had we been legally married, my employer's insurer would have covered the bills. In other words, the hospital (through donors and surcharges on insured patients) and New York State covered expenses that would have been covered by private insurance, given gay marriage.

And this is only ONE of the many reasons to recognize gay marriage, Children of same-sex couples are another consideration.

Wake up, New York, and adapt your laws to the real world.
