Women Raped in Brooklyn, Manhattan
The Daily News reports that two separate incidents of women being raped by strangers yesterday morning. One incident occurred around 7AM, when a NJ woman headed to a Spanish Harlem building where she works as a baby-sitter. The woman was "grabbed," "dragged" and raped in the elevator. Police are not sure if she was followed (she had taken the 6 train to 103rd Street).
The other assault occurred on the N train which was waiting at Coney Island, around 4:30AM. The victim had first taken the W at 49th Street (probably transferred at some point) and fallen asleep. When she woke up, she was at the end of the subway line and found "a man looming over her as the train idled in the Coney Island station." The man asked her, "How much?" and after she told him she wasn't a prostitute, he left.
The woman, who had slept through her stop, told police she then fell asleep again and was awakened by the man pinning her to the ground, raping her as he held a box cutter to her face.WABC 7 says she ran to get help from the train conductor and was later treated at Coney Island Hospital. The police are looking for both attackers.During the attack, the train continued to its next stop and the man fled, cops said.

Hope this does not come off as a "blame the victim" comment, but you should never allow yourself to fall asleep on a train. Especially after someone has propositioned you for sex! Granted this poor woman may very well have been attacked had she been awake, but at least she would have had a chance to fight him off.
Amusing how they give no profile of the assailants.
You know what that means...

I also don't want to seem like i am blaming the victim, but if i was awoken on the train with some psycho "looming over" me, i would make it my damn business TO KEEP MYSELF AWAKE at all costs for the return trip!
in fact, i think i would be so freaked out i wouldn't be able to sleep if i tried.
I have woken up at Coney Island 3 times in my life. Once, I also woke up at Coney Island, then woke up in Queens. Yeah, it's bad to pass out on the trains, but it happens. Scary story.
Sleeping on the train is never a good idea especially in the hours after midnight. I've ended up in Coney Island a couple of times - not fun. And one time I had my wallet cut out of my jeans pocket one time when I was asleep.
W train?
doesn't run after midnight...
...and it ends at Whitehall/South Ferry.
Well, the W does run to/from Kings Highway in the early morning and late night. I often jump off the N at 36th/Pacific and get on the W so I can get a seat, since it'll stop at my stop anyway.
Good God, Don't fall asleep on the subway.
the only time to pass your stop is if you see a hottie and you got a woody.
I don't know what city you all live in, but in the last 3 years or more the W train has never gone past Whitehall, no matter what time of day.
It's OK, go ahead and say it. The woman who passed out twice on the train at 4:30 AM brought it upon herself.
NO, she didn't deserve it. NO, she wasn't asking for it. But yes, she does have to take responsibility for her own safety, and it sounds like in this case she did exactly the opposite.

What part of the city are you living in? If you don't take the N on a daily basis, then you wouldn't see it happen. They still often send Ws to Kings Highway around 9 PM, right when the W is about to stop running.
#10:
Be realistic: they went out of their way to not mention the race of the victim or attacker, why? Do you think there is a chance that a white guy raped a black women in either of these cases? No, because the word hate crime wasn't mentioned.
Though you should never pass out on the subway, maybe she could have paid for a cab driver to assault her. Moral of this week's stories: if you're female don't walk into a building, ride the subway, or hail a cab.
Maybe the city needs to invest in some hovercrafts for the ladies.
"...went out of their way not to mention the race of the victim or the attacker."
They also went out of their way not to mention their names. And where they grew up. And their medical histories. And their childhood hopes and dreams. And any awards they may have received. And pets they may have had. And why they never call anymore. And who made these delicious cookies. And what time the big game starts. And would you grab me a beer while you're up.
The article is screaming with unwritten information. It makes me weep to think of it.
heh heh. Good one, virgil.
But usually, when they don't name the race of the perpetrator, the perp is white.
And they typically don't report when black women are raped or kidnapped...
