Rudy Giuliani Officially Drops Out of Presidential Race

2008_01_rudyends.JPG

The former mayor is finally out of the hunt for the White House. Rudy Giuliani made the announcement at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California, with John McCain beside him. Giuliani endorsed McCain, saying the country needed "someone who can be trusted in times of crisis." He added, "Obviously I thought I was that person. The voters made another choice."

2008_01_rudyends2.JPGOn a plane from Florida to California, Giuliani told reporters that he was dropping out. From the Daily News:

"I called some of our strong supporters early today and told them what I think you all now know, which is that I am going to endorse John McCain," he told reporters aboard a private 727 that was winging him to California from Florida, where he placed a distant third in Tuesday's primary.

"It's disappointing to lose a race for president because you believe you're the best candidate," he added. "But I am supporting John McCain. And he is far and away the best person to right now be the commander in chief of the United States."

He added that he hasn't asked for a cabinet position, thinks he'll be a "mostly private" person and will remain involved in Republican politics.

Politico thinks Rudy's defeat means the end of 9/11 politics.

My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over.

Prepare to strike Giuliani from the gothamist go-to list.

Don't despair gothamist. You can probably milk another story or two out of Heath Ledger, and there's always race-baiting and grafitti-is-art articles. It's just a recession. You'll survive.

Oh, eyekantspell - Giuliani will never be off our go-to list.

What is the 45 million dollar lesson here?

If you plan on running for public office, it is probably not a good idea to piss off the public.

Keep 'em coming! Otherwise, my name would be meaningless.

In the end the country just wasn't ready for a man who use to sport a comb over.

As long as we've got Rudy, we'll have race-baiting. Fear not, my friend.

And now that I think about it, what is to become of Judy the Cross-Eyed Golddigger?

He's now free to run for President of Seaside, New Jersey......

Good night funnyman.

Rudy will live forever as the man who pulled our city through the crisis that was unparalleled, one of fat-filled fat-free frozen yogurt, or as we all sadly know it now: frauxgurt. He was a courageous man for a time that called for a hero, on tv.

Never forget.

wait!! 9/11, 9/11, 9/11, 9/11, 9/11, 9/11, 9/11!!!

meanwhile at city hall...

Yay!

What a relief.

However, seeing him in that photo with that other ingenuous dumbbell, McCain is unsettling. Vice president Rudy? AHHHHHHHH!!111

Giuliani never had a chance to begin with anyway. Good use of wasting money and resources.

Ed Koch on Rudy dropping out (courtesy Doonesbury): "The beast is dead." Hallelujah.

He doesn't get to experience the humiliation of losing in New York on Tuesday? That's too bad.

There is a God! Now if only the media had gotten behind John Edwards. The only candidate who actually discussed a plan...

*pinches self* It WAS just a nightmare, after all!

And they didn't even scratch the tip of Rudy's iceberg of sleaze. Most of the papers just dolloped out little tidbits of Giuliani's ponzi scheme triangulated with electoral politics. We were just getting to the real juicy revelations, Rudy, and you had to go away...

Goodbye America's *#@!. How about one last word for us. Uh, how about sometimes besides 9-11.

Goodbye America's $#%@! how about one last word? uh, how about something else besides "9-11"?
