Mayors of NYC and Boston Make Super Bet on Super Bowl

2008_01_superbowlbet.jpg

2008_01_superbowlxlii.jpgMayor Bloomberg and Mayor Thomas Menino of Boston are putting it all on the line for Sunday's Super Bowl. After winning the awful bet from Green Bay, Bloomberg has a lot more riding on the line when the Giants face off against the Patriots this weekend. As is the custom when the playoffs roll around, the mayors of the teams participating decided on a friendly food wager. The stakes, or should we say steaks, are upped in this bet as the Vince Lombardy Trophy are on the line.

Here's a look at what Menino and Bloomberg are betting. From Boston and Menino:

  • 100 cups of New England Clam Chowder from Legal Sea Foods
  • 42 pounds of coffee from Dunkin' Donuts (in honor of Super Bowl XLII)
  • 12 dozen Boston Cream Pies and 12 Dozen Parker House Rolls (in honor of Tom Brady's #12) from Boston's Omni Parker House Hotel
  • 100 Old Tyme hot dogs and 100 Alfresco chicken sausages from Kayem
  • 20 pizzas from Sal's
  • 5 cases of Brigham's Boston You're My Home Ice Cream
  • 5 cases of Cherry on the Top Frozen Yogurt Bars from Elan
  • 100 servings of Stonyfield Farm Organic Yogurt

From New York and Bloomberg:
  • 42 pastrami and corned beef sandwiches from Carnegie Deli
  • 42 "Big Blue Cheese Eli Mann-Eater Burgers" from Gallagher's Steak House
  • One case of beef cocktail patties and one case of chicken cocktail patties from Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill in the Bronx
  • A selection of five pizzas from Goodfella's Pizzeria on Staten Island
  • 42 pounds of rugelach, 42 pounds of assorted layer cakes and 42 black and white cookies from Junior's
  • One 2.5 gallon tub of lemon ice and one 2.5 gallon tub of ice of the flavor of Boston's choice from the Lemon Ice King of Corona
  • 100 servings of Manhattan clam chowder and one bushel of Blue Point Oysters from the Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant
  • 20 pounds of "Super Steak" from Peter Luger Restaurant and six bottles of Peter Luger steak sauce.
We certainly know which city's putting up the best goods in this bet.

Our friends at Bostonist tell us that the Boston Cream Pie at the Omni Parker Hotel is great, but if you take a look at the rest of the items Boston has to offer, except maybe the Clam Chowder, New York's offerings clearly take the cake. Dunkin' Donuts? Puuuhleeze! We can buy that chain coffee anywhere. And New Yorkers certainly don't want your hot dogs or pizza, we've already got the best of that.

Once again, Mayor Bloomberg shows that New York has what it takes to beat any city in food betting. Now, if only the Giants can make sure that Boston delivers all that food!

In addition to Dunkin, we have Legal Sea Foods in this area (White Plains, Garden City, Nyack, Short Hills, Paramus) too. And we've got the most famous hot dogs in the world right here in Brooklyn, why do we need theirs? And don't even get me started on cruddy Boston pizza. That whole pile of junk they're betting isn't even worth the Luger steaks, let alone the rest.

Yeah, but Bostonians *live* by Dunkin' Donuts. It's an institution there. A lot of New Yorkers think DD's coffee sucks, mainly because they'd rather pay more at Starbucks - as if that means something.

And who pays for all of it?
We do.

Once again, the mayor of East Rutherford gets screwed.

i think the food is donated by the establishments. and then the winning city donates the food after it collects.

We also get Stonyfield yogurt. Boston got corporate sponsors, New York got local ones.

Pretty substantial wagers! I'd take either bet.

[New York] We'll donate all this great stuff if we lose!

[Boston] Well I'd guess we'd better put together a good list too, so we don't look ... ah, who are we kidding? There's no way the Giants are winning this game.

I love Stonyfield yogurt...but I can buy that at Pathmark. Would be nice if it were something different.

What a sucker bet.

Considering the money line odds, their offer should have been three and a half times the value of our offer.

We wager Luger Steaks, and they wager hotdogs? I sure hope that our good Mayor negotiates better with Albany than he does with Beantown.

GO GIANTS!

The last time I was at a Legal Seafoods a guy came out of the bathroom after soiling himself and covered in puke. Granted, it was New Year's Eve, and it was also Boston.

Who gets to eat all the food?

"Once again, the mayor of East Rutherford gets screwed."

haha, win.

Mann-Eater Burgers do not sound good to me. Super Steak, on the other hand...

Great point, tien & Ace. Only things of equal value on that list are cups of chowder. Bahston's Mayor "Mumbles" Menino clearly outsmarted Bloomie.

Perhaps Bloomie being a billionaire has no clue how to make a bet involving mere hundreds & thousands. Maybe he simply couldn't understand Menino, famous for his incomprehensible mumbling. Or maybe NYC wants to show off to a sleepy college town in Mass.
If we lose, they'll get a taste of finer things in life.

Gotta give it to Legal - their Clam Chowder is just awesome.

Question for New Yorkers. What about Connecticut or Rhode Island? Some of them associate with NYC others with New England. What are they to do?

Bloomberg may be a secret Pats fan, he's from Boston originally.

This is the deal, seriously? Bloomberg's offer is *so* much better than Menino's.

I'd prefer a one-month expenses-paid stay at Mike's Bermuda estate.

No bagels from NY?! Because the bagels in Boston SUCK. Well most of the food there sucks, but especially the bagels. And don't tell me Dunkies' bagels count. I am talking about real bagels.

boston is so cheap a**

They're missing out on the best things in Boston anyway...

Boston should be wagering canoli from Modern Pastry, Roast Beef Sandwiches from Kelly's, Fried Clams from Woodman's of Ipswich, ribs from Red Bones, and if you HAVE to wager pizza from Boston...it should be from one of the only two decent pizza places on the North End: Regina's or Circle Pizza.

THE REAL, GEOGRAPHICALLY ACCURATE BET:

I totally agree -- you hit some of my favorite Boston treats. Especially Redbones and Kelly's. I would have maybe said ice cream from Herrell's, too.

Why isn't there Brooklyn Lager and Sam Adams on the list?

eeeeewwwwwwww Golden Crust Patties?!?!?!
dog food. There are ridiculously better patties in NYC.
