Black Cat Lost at the 59th Street Subway Station

2008_01_georgiacat.jpgOne cat owner is hoping that her kitten will turn up after escaping at the 59th Street uptown 6 platform earlier this week. Ashely Phillips had just gotten black kitteh Georgia (pictured) spayed at the Humane Society when the feline somehow escaped her carrier "and just took off."

Phillips told the Daily News a train was pulling in when Georgia "jumped onto the tracks": "I'm hoping she's down there somewhere and she's okay...but I'm also realistic about her chances." The transit workers and police officers tried to help Phillips find the cat, but they were unsuccessful. The MTA said transit workers would walk the tracks as well. The News adds if you see the kitten "she's all black, very small, and likely very scared and hungry."

We are hoping for the best. If a cat can survive ten days with a bottle on its head, a cat might be able to survive the subways...right?

Ok so it was my cat that ran away, and no I am no an idiot. And not her carrier was not secured properly, but that was the Humane Society's fault, I never thought to check her carrier because like any normal person I assumed it would be secured right. And I did check the queensboro station and it wasn't my cat.

The Daily News article doesn't say exactly when the cat escaped, Tuesday the 22nd or Tuesday the 15th? This picture was taken at a 4th ave station on Tuesday the 17th:

I SAW THIS CAT ON FRIDAY NIGHT AT QUEENSBORO PLAZA AS WELL.

I don't know if it helps but I think I saw this kitten on the subway tracks Tuesday night about 9pm at Queensboro Plaza on the Ditmars-bound elevated N train track. It was running back and forth down the tracks. Some people tried to call it to jump up onto the platform but it didn't listen. I felt so helpless. Luckily the train had signal problems so the kitten was gone by the time one finally came. Crazy - it must have run all the way along the tracks under the river. So I would maybe focus on searching in Queens...

I feel bad for the cat; but her own does sound like an idiot.

" the feline somehow escaped her carrier "and just took off." "

Somehow escaped a carrier made to carry a cat.... this sounds like people that get mugged and say the guy came out of nowhere (muggers are not ghosts)

Pay attention people! This is NYC pay attention!! I see people with carriers all the time and they are more secure than Fort Knox - how this cat allegedly escaped is beyond possibilty if the carrier was secured properly.

I do hope you find your cat - my overall message is to pay attention to your surroundings and what is going on.

No, NYC sewer RATS eat cats speaking of which, I think I'm gonna head down to the LES this weekend for some pastrami on rye.

About 10 days ago I saw a cat running across 80th Street through the wrought iron fence onto the lawn of the Natural History Museum. I ran after the cat, hoping to catch it, but it ran off into the shadows (it was 9pm or so). I guess that it is pretty unlikely that this is your cat.

I hope that you find him.

Oh, this is terrible. :[ I do hope she finds her Georgia.

Again, Gothamist, you guys are so freaking awesome for being so cat/animal friendly. You make me sleep better at night.

Hopefully Georgia is getting some sleep and will return home soon.

Ashley, good luck to you in getting your Georgia back.

Lesson: Don't open the carrier to pet the animal! Some people have no common sense. I do hope the cat turns out OK..

I'm sure transit workers and police are doing all they can.

I was once on a train that was ordered to run over a puppy. We felt the impact.

    Meow.

This story is sad, jen! You ruined my evening, I'm going to have to go to the bar and drink now. (ok that was the plan before the story)

    Unicorn chaser post please.

That's like a plot to an animated movie --- a black kitten struggling to survive in the NYC subways against trains and giant NYC rats.
