Though there's a "tentative deal" for President Bush's proposed economic stimulus plan in D.C., Mayor Bloomberg thinks it's a bad idea. During a speech last night (accepting an award from the U.S. Conference of Mayors), he outlined why the package was a problem. From the NY Sun:
The $145 billion proposal being negotiated centers around the idea of providing several hundred dollars in tax rebates to individuals and families in a bid to spur the economy — a plan that Mr. Bloomberg said could "modestly benefit Americans" but would not "make a huge difference" overall because of the enormous deficits the government has already run up.And who better to do that an a successful billionaire businessman as President, hmm? Bloomberg also touted his success in getting the city's finances on track and suggested spending money on infrastructure (New Deal-style) to spur job growth as well as "financial counseling and subsidized loans for people trapped in bad mortgages.""We can't borrow our way out of this problem. The jig is up," the mayor said in a 20-minute speech at the National Building Museum. "It's time to start getting our house in order once and for all, which I believe starts with a simple idea: making decisions based on the business cycle instead of the election calendar."
And speaking of money, right now, the Mayor is proposing the new budget for the 2008-2009 fiscal year; so far, he wants to make cuts into pretty much every agency, due to the "likelihood of a recession."

Run, Bloomberg, Run
Yes, please please please run...
Yes, please please please run...
i'd love to see him as president and i'd vote for him, but i defecate kittens just thinking about another potential Ralph Nader scenario. if anything gives the GOP another four years i'll cry.
but if that wouldn't happen as a result, id love for this man to be prez.
Unite For Mike and get him to run! Draft Mike Bloomberg today!
I'm torn.. While Bloomberg would no doubt be a great President, I fear he would be a Nader.
He woudl be another Nader. If he runs, he should have run at the beginning. Now it's too late and he will just guarantee that McCain wins (that's right, it will be McCain vs. Clinton). We don't need a third party candidtae at this juncture. He should run a proper campaign in four years.
@RealityCzech:
I like that--good compromise. He can see the city through budget cuts and the nationwide recession, then use that experience (providing it goes well) as fodder for a prez bid.
He'll definitely be less political and more business. Maybe that's what we need.
Ross Perot, the last billionaire to toss his hat in the ring, ran in 1992 and received 19% of the popular vote. And Ross Perot was not only a wacky character, but had a terrible pick for VP, James Stockdale (who I'm sure is a fine person, but had no idea what he was doing).
Bloomberg would make a much better candidate, has political experience, is not crazy, and might actually turn our screwed up economy around.
Nader received under 3% of the popular vote in 2000, which only mattered because the race ended up being so close.
I say go for it Bloomberg. Enough of this two party nonsense.
Here's another capital L Liberal who likes Bloomburg.
I think Bloomburg could easily win. I think that he would take just as many votes away from the Republicans as he would take away from the Liberals. Most people like to call themselves moderate. I think since Bloomburg would run as an independent some people might consider him middle of the road and throw their votes his way.
I hope Obama wins, but I wouldn't be sad if Bloomburg were our next president.
(Mitt Romney though?? I can't believe that he has come so far.)
Bloomberg is an interesting guy but we're only talking about him because he's in the NYC and he's got more money than Mitt.
He'd need the right person running with him, too. A non-hawk guy with national security credibility...Powell. I know he sold the war at the U.N. but he was the only reason we even teased with them. I wonder if he'd like a shot a redemption.
Bloomberg is an egomaniacal rich prick.
He's balanced the city books on the backs of the poor and middle class, and given handouts in the form of firesale prices for land and egregious tax breaks, to his developer cronies. Under that aegis, he enabled overbuilding to the point of fiscal collapse, without making those same developers pay for infrastructure costs, like schools and emergency services. You're going to pay for that now, with his new budget.
He is a horrible little man.
He's run all of the poors out of the city. If he became president, where is he going to run the nation's poor?
My guess is a Guantanamo-style sitch in Detroit.
