Heath Ledger, 1979-2008

200801sad.jpgYesterday afternoon the world learned of Heath Ledger's untimely death. Both old and new media gossiped, rumor-mongered, and pitched their circus tents outside of his building on Broome Street the moment word spread. Sadly, most of his close friends and relatives, including his parents, heard about the tragedy through the newswire.

The young actor was embraced as a fairly new resident of New York (first in Brooklyn, then in Manhattan). The NY Times recalls that when he moved to Brooklyn “Ledger, who’s had a rocky relationship with the paparazzi in Australia, has found Brooklyn’s residents to be a good deal mellower." He was even touted, mostly in jest, by some locals as being part of a "New Victorian" movement, most knew of him by his trade: actor.

He was first noticed by many in the 1999 teen romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You, starring alongside Julia Stiles. He was cast in the movie around the same time he moved to the States from Australia, and he soon sky-rocketed to the A-list, perhaps truly breaking-out in 2005's Brokeback Mountain. It was while making that film that he and Michelle Williams became close, and on October 28th, 2005 their daughter Matilda Rose was born. The two were engaged, but reportedly never married, and after spending a couple of years in their townhouse in Brooklyn they separated and moved out in September of last year.

Last year also saw the release of another highly anticipated film that Ledger was a part of, I'm Not There, portraying one version of Bob Dylan in the biopic. And lastly, this year movie fans have been hotly anticipating his latest release, The Dark Knight, in which he plays The Joker in the follow-up to Batman Begins. As most promos for the film (due out in July) have been centered on Ledger's character, there are now big questions as to how the film will be marketed. The Dark Knight will be the last work of the young talent; he was currently still shooting The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Heath Ledger was 28 years old. His autopsy is being performed today. And as BWE's Alex Blagg stated, "A man died, as we all will. So have some class, show some respect, and please, by the gods of decency and dignity, exercise a little restraint."

I won't have any respect for him if he OD'd. But if he killed himself, then he's in elysium.

Enough already with this story.

another celeb bites the dust..oh well.. move along..save the earth or something

3 stories about this? Is this supposed to be poignant?

Unless there's any new news on this, I think we can let it lie. Those who knew him best should have their chance to mourn.

there's no dignity in suicide.

There's no point in speculating since his death could have been intentional, accidental or natural causes. My condolences to his family.

So where's the "decency and dignity" part kick in? Before or after y'all showed the photo of Ledger in a body bag on a stretcher? Seems a somewhat hypocritical choice of closing quote. Are we supposed to not remember that you guys were part of the salivating masses less than 24 hours ago?

whether it was suicide or not, he was a talented actor and obviously a troubled man. no matter what the autopsy shows, he deserves respect.

I beg to differ with the 'no dignity in suicide' comment.

Hunter S. Thompson killed himself and was completely dignified in doing so. He had a terminal illness and was not about to let his friends and family suffer through watching him deteriorate.

Suicide as an alternative to escaping life's problems is sad and a bit selfish, but to do so as a way of alleviating the problems of others requires bravery and compassion.

Yeah, this is a real shame, real sad. Anyways, I hear there's some more bar closings in Williamsburg?

I'm having trouble removing the skid marks from my undershorts. Can someone help me out here?

What do Jake Gylennhal’s cherry and a bottle of Paxil have in common?

They both got popped by Heath Ledger.

Reality Czech: You're just like a school on Sunday... NO CLASS.

It's too soon for that kind of thing. Give it a few months and then you can post your truly tasteless joke.

Really is tragic.
And really such a waste - accident or not.

He could have had a brillant career

I mean really if he had a chance to be acting for 30 years - would have produced some fine roles - really would have been something as a 50-60 year old actor.

such a waste

He would always be a b-list actor. He wouldn't have a brilliant career. At best, he was a young willem dafoe.

While the article is written nicely with respect, I'm finding some of the comments to be tasteless and disgusting. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. Grow up and act like decent human beings.
