Heath Ledger's Death, Covered
The shocking news of Heath Ledger's death in an SoHo apartment is front page news.
The Post uses a lovely photograph of Ledger and ex-fiancee Michelle Williams while the Daily News uses a still from Brokeback Mountain. Both focus on drug-related cause of death, though the News emphasizes it more.

Newsday gives more attention to the economy while placing news of Ledger's death in a sidebar (Newsday's readership is more Long Island-based). amNew York uses a photograph of Ledger, mentions that the cause of death is still unknown and notes the crowd outside of Ledger's Broome Street building.

The NY Times and NY Sun both feature news of Ledger's death on the front page, but below-the-fold, with photographs.

Looks like the entire society has jumped the shark. I have complete sympathy for Ledger, his child and his family, but this shouldn't be front page news on every paper. There's a war on two fronts, the economy is melting down and we're attempting to pick new leadership for the country. Please, someone call Nell Carter and give me a break.
I agree. I'm unusually surprised at Gothamist for jumping on the bandwagon too. There's already a post with 80+ comments. Do we really need two more posts for people to write:
"Truly sad."
"RIP Heath." (because so many people were on a first name basis. Especially in NYC where we "adopted" him)
"He will be missed."
"So young...so sad."
"Such potential"
Don't forget, emilydickinson, the more important topic. Picking a new leader for this country is a distant second to American Idol now that it is back on.
New York Post and the Daily News—always class acts!
Emily Dickinson, go read BBC or Guardian news if you're looking for real news—that's what I do, because you never get the full story on anything this side of the Atlantic. You know damned well that American news is celebrity-driven garbage at ALL times. Tis the American way!
That said, I share the general sentiment that it's a shame about Mr. Ledger :(
I only read the Daily News for the comics.
Well, that and the crazy letters to the editor.
A fun thing to do is check out the Newseum's Today's Front Page page which has front pages from newspapers from around the US and around the world. You'll see how little coverage was given to this story on front pages.
