Pencil This In

012208shaw.jpgTHEATER: We saw Fiona Shaw in Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days on Saturday and highly recommend it. Shaw is mesmerizing in her performance as Winnie, crystallizing in her 90-minute virtuoso performance all the desperation, self-delusion and absurdity of an entire lifetime. (Her little-seen costar Tim Potter is also a hoot as Willie.) The production is as bitterly funny as it is affecting, and, as a metaphor, the blasted landscape that devours Winnie is as potent as it was in 1960, when the play was written. In our interview with Fiona Shaw she mentioned talk of a Broadway transfer, but don't take any chances; see it at BAM before it closes on February 2nd. – John Del Signore

7:30pm // BAM Harvey Theater [651 Fulton Street] // Ticket prices vary.

MOVIE: Oscar nominated filmmaker Oren Jacoby has a new documentary out called Constantine’s Sword. Based on James Carroll’s book of the same name, it's the story of the author, "a former Catholic priest on a journey to confront his past and uncover the roots of religiously inspired violence and war." Carroll will be on hand for a Q&A after the film screens.

8pm // Trinity Church [Broadway at Wall St] // Free

MUSIC: Folk reigns in the East Village tonight (as it should) as sister of Rufus, Martha Wainwright takes the stage of The Stone singing the tunes of Edith Piaf. Joining in on the fun are clarinetist Doug Weiselman and pianist Thomas Bartlett (who you may know as Doveman).

8pm // The Stone [Corner of Ave C and 2nd St] // $10

EVENT: Union Hall wants to educate you! Their Adult Education event tonight is described as follows: "On YouTube, there are scores of toddler's expressions after sucking on lemons. On flickr, entire groups are organized around photos of people wearing sweatshirts, photos of painted trains, photos of body hair. You could fill a small bookshelf with fake children's memoirs. In this show, we discuss several examples of what we're calling micro-genres." Confused yet? Pay attention! The following will be on hand for the session: Liz Clayton: The Architecture of Converted Fast-Food Restaurants; Paul Lukas: On Elevator World, American Jails, Nut Grower Monthly, and other obscure trade magazines; Heidi Cody: Eskimos and Indians on Food Packaging; Jim Hanas: On meta-tourism: photos of tourists taking photos...and more!

8pm // Union Hall [702 Union St, Park Slope] // Free
