Super Cover Day for the Giants

If there's one thing to warm up New Yorkers - and New York newspaper editors thinking about a holiday issue - today, it's the Giants' NFC Championship win over the Green Bay Packers. Let's look at how they touted the big win.

The Post opts for quarterback Eli Manning on the cover and kicker Lawrence Tynes on the back sports cover. Points for puns on both headlines.

The Daily News and Newsday both use the same shot of Lawrence Tynes after his game-winning field goal for their covers, and the News chooses Manning for the back sports cover. We like the "Mr. Freeze" headline, but maybe that's just because we like Batman. The NY Times uses a photograph of Tynes' winning field goal for the center of the front page; the Giants story is nestled between stories about the Pentagon and 2008. Yeah, readers need something a little feel-good today.

Overall, Tynes is on three out of four covers, while Manning is on one. Manning has been on a number of covers throughout his four seasons with the Giants and we expect him to be on many more until the Super Bowl. And for some out of town perspective, here's how the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Green Bay Press-Gazette spun the story.

That Newsday sports shot is from Sunday, not today, hence the photo and headline that says "If Giants win..."

Looks like Bloomberg is going to get his truckload full of mediocre industrial cheese from Wisconsin.

  • GOOD TYNES!

  • my guess is newsday didn't have time to wait for photos from the wires.

My front page headline would have been: "Eli to Pack: No Supe for You!"

  • Dave Hogarty

Newsday couldn't buy a picture of Manning from yesterday's game to put on its back page? That's odd.

    "Why no Favre?"

Because they are currently replacing his blood with formaldehyde for hall of fame preservation before he makes anymore decisions to continue with another season.
