On To Arizona! One Final Road Trip for Giants

2008_01_superbowlxlii.jpgThe Giants are going to the Super Bowl! Thanks to a 47-yard field goal in overtime New York defeated Green Bay on the infamous “frozen tundra” 23-20 to advance to Super Bowl XLII.

It was a game of dramatic twists and turns and it produced some unlikely heroes. Start with Dominic Hixon who had several big kick returns in the second half, but most importantly recovered R.W. McQuarters fumbled punt return at midfield with just over two minutes remaining in a tie game. Hixon was a member of the Denver Broncos when the season started.

Then look at Corey Webster. Webster will be remembered for his fantastic interception to setup the winning field goal, but his tackle of Ryan Grant on 3rd-and-3 in the fourth quarter saved a potential touchdown and forced the Packers to kick a game-tying field goal. Webster lost his starting job early in the season and has only played recently due to injury.

Or, consider Ahmad Bradshaw who barely made this team out of training camp and finished the NFC Championship with 63 yards and a touchdown. And there are countless other examples of guys who stepped up to make this win possible. Plaxico Burress had a huge game while Amani Toomer and Steve Smith made some huge catches. Antonio Pierce made several big plays and Justin Tuck, Osi Umneyiora and Michael Strahan got in Brett Farve’s face. And don't forget Eli Manning and the game that he had.

Suffice it to say, it was a team effort and this team that seemed so lost just over a month ago is now heading to Arizona for a rematch with the Patriots and a chance to stop history. With the success of the Giants on the road, it should be noted that they will officially be the road team in the Super Bowl.

No one can cover Plaxico mano-y-mano. Tall WRs are becoming a must-have for any team (Randy Moss,T.O.,etc.) One day, defensive coordinators will catch on a put someone tall in the secondary.

And to give you a little back story on why I can root for the Giants even though I'm a Cowboys fan. Back when LT was dominating the league as the best linebacker, he did something that I will always love him for... he ended Joe Theisman's career. Well, his football career. If only someone could end his career as one of the worst commentators ever...

Under "Lucky for the Giants" also add Green Bay's continued belief that they could cover Plaxico Burress one-on-one. Al Harris may not want to show up for the Pro Bowl after that game.

Yes, the Giants got quite lucky in a few cases Sunday night. Five fumbles but only one turnover, a few key GB penalties at inopportune times, and a dropped INT in the first quarter.

But the Giants were also quite unlucky in a lot of ways. Two missed FGs that would have won the game in the 4th quarter, a blatant 3rd down pass interference penalty by GB that wasn't called, a clear offsides penalty that wasn't called against a defensive end who sacked Manning on 3rd down, that stupid penalty against Sam Madison which cost the Giants 4 points, some dropped passes, and a holding penalty that negated a game-winning TD with 2 minutes left.

Both teams made numerous mistakes which benefitted the other side. But the Giants defense shut down the running game and held GB to only 90 total yards after halftime, including three-and-outs on their last three possesions. And that's what won the game.

I think 80 percent of the world will be rooting for the Giants in Arizona (and I'm not sure how I feel about that). I know personally that I would NEVER root for the Cows in the Superbowl no matter what. I don't care if Pol Pot was coaching the other team.

1)The "How Bout Dem Cowboys!" posts were put in when the Cowboys won. It had nothing to do with the Giants. I posted them to whatever football recaps were available, including the Jets recaps (guess you don't care about them).

2)I'll admit it was a 'sour grapes' comment, but sometimes winning the game isn't always the best course of action. I told you I don't like T.O., and if it takes Dallas losing to keep him from winning a ring, then so be it. I may take different routes to justify the statement, but in the end, my hatred of T.O. outshines my love of the Cowboys.

3)I'm sorry that you get pissed when someone says you're team is going to lose. If I got mad every time someone told me that, I'd turn into the Hulk. It's just a potshot that most sports fans are used to. Hell, I got worse than I've given the Giants from Rangers fans when I wore a Thrashers jersey to a game between the two teams (Thrashers won) and even then, it was just good natured sportsmanship.

4)You honestly believe that the Giants won that game entirely on talent, that luck was not involved in any way?

Everything being said, at least you're not as bad as the Washington Redskins fan I've seen at the bar who makes sure everyone in the place can hear him give his two cents about every play and every player, and then when his team loses, blames it on the officials.

Good luck on the 3rd. I truly am rooting for you. No shit.

You were attacked (at least by me) for four reasons: 1) for the way you crapped all over every Giants Gothamist entry this year with your stupid HOW BOUT DEM COWBOYS posts; 2) for that incredibly ridiculous sour grapes comment about not wanting to be in the Superbowl; 3) for saying the Giants will get their heads handed to them in the Superbowl; and 4) for saying that the Packers somehow lost the game instead of the Giants winning it.

Other than that everything is fine.

I think it's really funny that I come on here and actually give the Giants their props and I'm attacked for it. Not only am I attacked for it, but it's done using a player I could really care less about.. T.O.

Although I'm not as fanatic (i.e. batshit crazy) a fan as some people are, you can't tell me that I'm the worst one ever. I've supported the Cowboys every year, even when they went 1-15. I just know when my team is outmatched, and Dallas does not have the defense they needed to win the Super Bowl.

I would love to see the Giants beat the Patriots because God knows they're the only New York team, besides the Islanders, that I can stomach, but I doubt very seriously that it's going to happen unless Brady somehow ends up sleeping with the fishes.

Question for all the Giants fans:What team has seen more Super Bowl Appearances, 8 total, than any other team in the NFL?

  • JMH

    D-O-M-E-N-I-C Hixon. Yes, I know it's nonstandard.

    Osi U-M-E-N-Y-I-O-R-A.

Brett F-A-V-R-E. Come on, everybody who's ever watched a game of football knows how this is spelled.

  • JenChungsBaby

Kojak, that's an excellent bet if you're getting the points. The G-men only lost by three to the Pats one month ago. No reason to think they'll roll over and lose by two TDs now (like Dallass did). In fact, the money's been all over the Giants as the line's swung from 14 points down to 12 in just two days.

It's too bad they have to wait two weeks and then play in a dome. Best scenario would be to play tomorrow at Lambeau all over again. The Giants are rolling and they don't need a week off now. I bet the Packers fans would even root for them. I know that the crowd in Arizona is going to be very pro-Giants.

  • Tim N.

That's funny coming from Matty, who lives at the center of gravity for front-running yuppie sports fans with tons of cash and no soul, aka Wrigley Field.

  • JenChungsBaby

That's right. There are no real football fans in this city. That's why the Giants have sold out every game since I was born and the waiting list for season tickets is over 30 years long. Sure.

As wonderful as the win over Dallass was, this comment makes it even sweeter:

    >>>>>> As for the SuperBowl, I'm glad Dallas didn't go, because I didn't want to watch them lose to the Patriots, like the Giants will.

That's the funniest thing since I saw Terrell Owens cry. REALLY? So were you happy that the Cows lost to the Giants or would you have preferred that they beat the Giants and then lost at home to the Packers?

    BWAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

"It's not fair. That's my teammate. [sob] That's my quarterback. [sob] We lost as a team. We lost as a team. [sniffle] But I'm sure glad we don't have to play the Patriots again. [blubber]"

This is when every front runner (Especially women who have never watched a game of football in their lives) in NYC will come out of the woodwork and chant "GO GIANTS!!".

And...? Playing in a championship game attracts casual fans, yes.

In other news, the sun rises in the east and water is wet...

  • berniegoetz

I wonder what would have happened if Scott Norwood had been given three shots at winning the game back in '91.

  • matty

I'm with Kojak, save the Yankees, that's pretty much how everyone in new york is. They hate sports and pretend to like it when it matters to them. gay. what a gay city.

  • Kojak

This is when every front runner (Especially women who have never watched a game of football in their lives) in NYC will come out of the woodwork and chant "GO GIANTS!!".

And yeah, they'll probably get their asses handed to them in two weeks time. But Just in case... I'm putting down $100 on the Giants.

    I BELIEVE!

  • TKaisen

As for the SuperBowl, I'm glad Dallas didn't go, because I didn't want to watch them lose to the Patriots, like the Giants will.

You might be the worst fan ever.

  • Politburo

From one stupid line to the other.. where will your rationalizations end? What fan is ever glad that their team lost? (aside from the situation where your team sucks so bad that you want them to lose for draft position)

  • Guest

    petemac

That's fine with me. I hated when they got Owens and I still don't like him, even if he is a damn good player.

As for the SuperBowl, I'm glad Dallas didn't go, because I didn't want to watch them lose to the Patriots, like the Giants will.

  • petemac

    "HowBoutDemCowboys":

The Giants out-played Dallas AND Greenbay and deserved to be in the Superbowl... leave the crying to Owens...

  • babyhitler

yes, politburo. If an asteroid hit the earth, everyone would be dead. But it didn't and the Packers didn't win. The Giants did, that's why they get the glory.

  • Politburo

Ah yes, the old "Team X didn't win, Team Y lost" canard.

Nevermind that a game is a complex mix of good play and bad play by both teams, in this case it just doesn't make sense. If Favre hadn't thrown the INT and GB got the win, everyone would be saying that it was the Giants who lost the game (2 missed FGs, the botched INT), not the Packers who won it.
