Giants Bag Pack 23-20, Pack Bags for Super Bowl

The Giants won the NFC Championship in overtime, beating the Green Bay Packers 23-20 in overtime and overcome the frigid, below-zero conditions. They are now headed to the Super Bowl where they will meet the New England Patriots, who beat the San Diego Chargers 21-12.

Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes missed a field goal as time expired in the fourth quarter, sending the game to overtime. Packers won the coin toss and received the ball, but Brett Favre threw an interception in Green Bay territory. Tynes got a chance to redeem himself and kicked the winning field goal from 47 yards away (overall he made three of five field goal attempts). And Giants quarterback Eli Manning had a good game, especially given the conditions, completing 21 of 40 attempts for 254 yards, no interceptions. Favre completed 19 of 35 for 236 yards but with two interceptions.

We'll have a more detailed write-up tomorrow, but in the meantime, should we chalk this up to the East Coast media conspiracy, with a Northeast Super Bowl? Mayor Bloomberg can expect the goods from his bet with Green Bay Mayor James Schmitt and we bet Tiki Barber's feeling pretty bummed right now!

The Super Bowl will be held in Glendale, Arizona on February 3 - get ready for non-stop Big Blue coverage from the local papers.

I'm actually not a huge Giants fan, i just know loser talk (we didn't get the calls, so and so was hurt, the field/court/ice was this and that, the refs were this and that, excuse excuse excuse) when I hear it.

If you didn't lose anything, don't talk like a loser.

  • JMH

For clarification's sake: a 47-yard field goal is kicked at the 37-yard line.

    Petemac:

As always, I am surprised at the high level of discourse on here. You must be one very intelligent person, using JACKASS in all caps like that -- I'm surprised you were able to figure out what "Caps Lock" actually means. Bravo!

  • @Politburo - you have to love that they had cameras on that sideline catch by toomer though. from both sidelines.

  • petemac

The interception came AFTER Harris pushed his way past the receiver JACKASS!

    How's that for INFORMED?

  • Bubba

Tiki, there's still no "I" in team.

  • nivek

    wickershee,

Why are you wasting your time? Unless you're watching on really low definition television, all of the reviewed plays were called correctly.

  • Politburo

You'd think for a conference championship they'd have more than enough cameras, but the personal foul on Madison and the possible offsides had shitty or no replays.

The roughing the passer was a borderline call, but the holding on the interception was not, imo. IIRC all of the Burress catches were supported by replay.

  • wickershee

    Rodney:

that's the thing about sports - it all comes down to perception. i would say almost the exact same as you, but i'd switch the names of the teams. for instance, i can think of at least half a dozen times where the Giants benefitted from ridiculous calls - two Burress catches on the sidelines that weren't, the negated Al Harris interception, the roughing the passer penalty on Barnett (?) and i know there are some others. it's like the refs were saying, "Aw shucks Giants, you couldn't make it on third down? Well here are four more tries, enjoy!"

and i completely disagree with you about Buck/Aikman, i was literally sick with their inane banter about how amazing the Giants were and how poor the Packers were playing. if that was so, why did the game go into OT? as i stated above, i will never be able to listen to them again - and i'm not being overly dramatic. it just won't be possible for me to stomach.

which is why i won't be watching the Giants lose in the Super Bowl. i will, however, be coming back here to read all of your gripes about how they were robbed, how the officiating was terrible, etc etc. wait until the shoe is on the other foot, as it were, and i think you'll understand my point about perception. (unless you're just the kind of person who enjoys calling other people losers instead of having an informed discussion, and then i just feel sorry for you.)

  • rodney

Hey wickershee, how do you explain all the non-calls on Al Harris and others manhandling Plaxico (who still grabbed 11 catches)? Even Aikman and Buck were pointing it out and they were so solidly in the Packer's camp it was sickening. I do have to admit it was a poorly officiated game, and it seemed to me that the refs were trying to set up the storybook Favre/Brady ending to this season. There was one drive where the Giants benefited from penalties, and the rest of the game the Packers got the calls.

    Tim N.:

loser talk? last time i checked, i didn't lose anything. i don't wrap my self-worth in whether or not a certain team loses a certain game, unlike you seem to. like i said, enjoy the gloating while it lasts -- precisely 13 days and counting.

  • Tim N.

    Loser talk, wickershee...

How about having to win a game in that frozen, haunted dump?

go choke on a braut in your cold chicago apartment!

    Go Big Blue!

  • bxbrian

^--- Go cry about it back in the Wis.

Sorry, native New Yorkers got to gloat last about this shit in 1994. No, I'm not including the Yankees because they rub in it everyone's faces.

  • wickershee

so much gloating, so little time ... enjoy it while it lasts.

ps. the officiating was the worst i've witnessed in some time, they basically handed the Giants this game on a silver platter. so many second chances where none were deserved. oh well.

pps. i will never, ever be able to stomach another Joe Buck/Troy Aikman telecast, ever.

  • Steven

Let's get ready for non-stop coverage now in the media for the next two weeks.

    Go Giants!!!!!

  • technically, he did redeem himself by kicking from the 47-yard line though. even if it was a 30-yard field goal.

  • Jen Chung

Thanks Kevin - I KNEW that I would foul up something with this. Random Oscar trivia I know, football details I'm hazy.

  • Kevin Walsh

    >>>Tynes got a chance to redeem himself at the 47-yard line

Actually they were at the 30 yard line and the field goal was 47 yards...

couldn't have happened to a worse team.

wait somebody only won one game this year right?

  • Dave Hogarty

My hat is off to the headline author; you beat me to what wouldn't have been better.

  • nonumentalart

    go giants

  • babyhitler

LOL at TIKI BARBER! HOW ABOUT HIM? The kicker messed up twice. but it was more like the snapper on the last one. The game made me cold just looking at it. This one looks like it's all Pats. Pats went 16-0 and then got lucky cause they didn't have to face the steelers or the colts and now they don't have to face the packers. The only thing the Giants have going for them is that everyone says it's all Pats and they don't have any pressure to win at all. 18-0 is a lot of pressure on the PATS. If the giants come in and score twice early on then the pats will be under so much intensity that their hubris will be used against them.

  • matty

yeah the giants won this one fair and square. the packs are my bitter rivals as a bears fan, but nice work. HOWEVER, I know for a fact the kicker would have been ROASTED in nyc had he not made it.

Still, I want history to be made...go Pats...I guess.

  • nivek

Brooklyn brew beer sucks though...how about throw in a Junior's cheesecake instead?

  • Dave Hogarty

Will there be a ceremonial wager between the editors of Gothamist and those of Bostonist? New England clam chowder and a sixer of Sam Adams vs. Manhattan clam chowder and a Brooklyn brew?

  • nivek

    Sorry, gonna do it first

    HOW BOUT DEM PACKERS?
