The Library of Congress Photo Archive Meets Flickr

Last night we received a link to a treasure trove of old copyright-free photos being hosted on the Library of Congress's Flickr page. Here's a link to all of their New York images, and some of our favorites are below and after the jump. The pilot project will get 3,000 of the Library's 14 million photographs online. See what both the Library of Congress and Flickr have to say about the endeavor.

Thanks Jen. Send a link to chicagoist would ya? There's some great stuff in there as well.

Awesome find!

this is awesome.

Actually wait. 70 Photos tagged New York and 37 for Chicago? I would have thought that there would be a lot more for both. Maybe they'll continue to add to it as time goes on.

I wasn't able to find many San Francisco or Gold Rush pics. Hmm...

This is why I heart gothamist.

These are amazing! You guys kick ass. I love the Union Square photo. Thanks!!!

Some drivers were idiots even back then.

love it. thank you!

This is great; the LOC has vastly more material than this, of course, but I think they're adding a bit at a time and allowing people to fill in the informational blanks by commmenting. Sort of a wikicaptionthingmawhosiwhatsis.
Beautiful stuff. The NYPL has an incredible online collection as well, for the curious.

These are so cool. I love the guy sleeping in the park...

I didn't know the Library of Congress even HAD a Flickr page. Thanks for informing us about this and for sharing these great photos!

I think my dream job would be scanning these in and cataloging them. WOW!!! I am obsessed with NYC history. Thanks for feeding the addiction!!! =)

Beautiful and timeless.

What is it about photos of Gilded Age New York that fascinate us more than any other period?

That Woolworth Building picture is so cool. Thanks for posting this!
