Flu Cases on the Rise, Free Flu Shots Still Available

The Health Department revealed that cases of the flu have increased 19% since November. Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden said urged New Yorkers who haven't gotten a flu shot yet to do so.

In November, there was an average of 4,900 flu-related hospital visits; last week, there were 5,832. It's most critical that adults 50 and over (especially those over 65), children between 6 months and 5 years, people with chronic medical conditions, health care workers and pregnant women get flu shots because if they do get the flu, they are at higher risk for complications.

Flu season can extend into May, and Commissioner Frieden said, "New Yorkers should call their doctor about getting a flu shot today or call 311 to find out where to get a free shot. For those who get influenza, covering your cough and staying home if you have a fever will help prevent the spread of illness." The Health Department also reminds coughers and sneezers to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.

There's also the NYC Influenza (Flu) Vaccine Information Page and Facility Locator.

let me guess, people that aren't getting flu vaccines are black and poor and are probably the type that don't go to the doctor regularly anyway?

That ad seems to imply that getting a flu shot is a great cause for joy and laughter and brings families together improving humanity in general and perhaps, fostering world peace. Or not.

Soooo - it seems like there are conflicting recommendations with flu shots. If you are in your 20's or 30's and are seemingly healthy, should you get a flu shot or not?
