Signs Go Up at "The House That Jeter Built"

It may be the off-season, but Yankees fans can look forward to something other than February 14th (that's pitchers and catchers reporting, not Valentine's Day). With the installation of an etched sign at the new stadium for the Yankees that says "Yankee Stadium," Opening Day, 2009 seems a little closer. The sign, etched in gold-leafed stone, was installed yesterday morning on the facade of the main entranceway to the new field.

The Post thinks that the sign installation is "rock-solid proof that unlike countless other sports teams that have given up stadium-naming rights to big corporations, Yankee tradition is not for sale." While the stadium may not end up with a corporate name, we don't think one stone sign means naming rights won't eventually be sold prior to 2009. After all, the Yankees need some way of generating some more income.

What's more revolting though is the nickname that some people have given the new stadium - "The House That Jeter Built." How about "The House That Money Built" or "The House That George Built"? Better yet, "The House That Subsidies Built." Let's not forget that the Yankees, and the Mets, are getting pretty good deals from city and state authorities on the new stadiums.

Dude69 = moron. Nice screen name btw. 69, so original, so sexy. You'll score lots of chix that way.

And what is it I lost anyway? Beside the 20 seconds it took to type these comments?

    SP = sore loser

It's sad to see the name Giants Stadium disappear. I guess you can't call it that anymore now that the Jests/Tenants are officially 50/50 stakeholders in the stadium, but I'll sure miss that name.

    Oh my goodness gracious!

Shitty Field [inevitable] vs. Yankee Stadium.

Yanks already win this one by forfeit, 9-0.

The Steinbrenners will just get everything else sponsored to get the cash they need. They already have the highest attendance in baseball - some 4 million people have bought tickets there for each of the past 2 years.

Think of the ballparks and arenas that do not have naming rights ... and in major league sports there's very, very few.

    Here are some examples:

    Fenway Park

Wrigley Field [yep, but it and the Cubs that play there WERE owned by the man who founded the chewing gum company, then his son. This one's grandfathered].

Soldier Field in the same city.

Madison Square Garden [believe they've thought about it, there would be an even bigger scream if Fredo Dolan sold that name, you think?]

    Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum

    Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum

    The Rose Bowl

    Louisiana Superdome

Everything else that's big ... the naming rights have been sold. And then some.

The one that will own the new record will probably be the new Giants/Jets stadium in NJ.

  • How about The House That Suzyn Waldman's Tears Built?

Just because no corporate name is up now doesn't mean it's never going to happen. You could still see something like Yankee Stadium presented by MySpace.com so they get to sell it and STILL call it Yankee Stadium, leave the fancy sign up, add the sponsor name and pretend they didn't sell out.

To think George Steinbrenner had purchase the Yankees from CBS for $10 million in 1973. One of the best investments ever. The Yankees are a very well run business. All other franchises should take note.

  • Polite New Yorker

As a Yankees fan, the idea that Yankee Stadium will be torn down disgusts me. What disgusts me more is the apathy of many fans. I will not set foot in this stadium, which is a big stab in the back to every Yankee fan, and New Yorker for that matter.

  • Tim N.

    Jealousy... it's so ugly.

Bear in mind you ding-a-lings that the Mets got the same subsidies, and then they sold out their naming rights.

As for cable, yeah, well, life sucks. It's the same all over. Boston's worse.

The house that greedy fatheads and their moronic fans built.

I'm not a fan of the Yankees but the government allows the duopoly of cable and satellite to force me to buy five ESPN channels, YES, SNY, MSG, etc. in the basic cable package. So whether I watch the games or not professional sports gets about $10 from me every month. And before anyone says "Nobody is forcing you" I would ask that you explain to me why I can't get only the channels I want.

Which reminds me, maybe along with cutting their dividend Citigroup could drop their sponsorship of the Mets' stadium.
Sounds like a good idea to me. Better that than slashing thousands of jobs, if you ask me.
  • CKNY

Any truth the the rumors that he clubhouse will have beds so Jeter and A-Rod can have more "sleepovers"?

uh, yeah, i know that you dipshit. A-rod had nothing to do with the old stadium being blown up. THATS the point, you morons.

  • EricGewiz

No, since the Mets aren't savvy enough to invite the press for the silent events like this. While not an advertised dedication, this was the closign thing to it. And all the media covered it!

  • MaiaW

While we're on the subject of new stadiums, does anyone know of any recent similar images of the new Citi Field? This was the only thing I could find, but it's kinda old: http://www.flickr.com/photos/adamsofen/1594745377/

Sorry SP, zpk wins this one.

He was referring to the old stadium, not the new one.

  • JMH

As a Mets fan, I'm jealous of the fact that the Yankees have not (yet, at least) sold naming rights for their new stadium.

I think it would be great if the city could find a way to landmark the old stadium, just so they don't tear it down. They can the space as park land, or even have a minor-league team in the stadium (AAA yankees?)

    YES! R.I.P. John Mullaly Park!

"No, because A-Rod had nothing to do with it, you imbecile. The new Yankee Stadium plan has been in the works for over a decade, long before A-Rod came to NY. Now go back to class, you silly child."

Oh, I see -- I didn't realize that "the house that Ruth built" was actually physically constructed by Babe Ruth. Man, that guy really was talented. Pitcher, batter, architect, carpenter...
