Extra, Extra

  • Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: missing children on 12th Ave. in Brooklyn, an overturned tractor trailer on the eastbound BQE in Queens, and an armed robbery on West 42nd St. in Manhattan.
  • The contraband room at JFK International: it's like a freegan's vision of heaven.
  • The clock atop the former Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower (now One Hanson Place) started ticking today at noon.
  • A man was charged with animal cruelty and endangering the public when he took his 70 lb. 14-foot python for a walk along Montauk Highway.
  • Rapper Foxy Brown is requesting a few sick days off from prison so she can go to LA and have her cochlear implant reprogrammed.
  • Students at Bronx Science walked out of class yesterday to protest the alleged control-freak antics of their principal, who is being blamed for the departure of a large number of popular teachers.
  • While Katie Holmes is in town promoting her new movie, she and her shorter half had dinner on the Upper East Side with Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld.
  • Curbed wonders what's the worst feature of the new NYU dorm on East 12th and 4th Ave. in Manhattan: the fact that they tore down a church to build it, the fact that the hi-rise dorm is chunky-puke-colored ugly, or that the school decided to preserve the church's narthex and steeple as a grand entranceway. Tough call.

how do you take a snake for a walk?

I live across the street from that NYU dorm and have watched it being built for the last year. The initial idea seemed cool with the facade of the church as the entrance, then the building kept on getting taller, then it blocked whatever view i had from the 7th floor roof. Now it's just an eyesore.

Apparently, the snake guy was walking down the highway with the snake wrapped around him. That doesn't seem so much dangerous to the public as it does dangerous to the snake, as it's pretty cold out.

that sounds awesome.

The snake had bruises on its body, according to the article.

NYU isn't building the dorm, Hudson Company is - NYU is leasing it.

...and Hudson company wanted to build condos, but the only way they could and could keep the facade of the church was to use the building for "community use" - hence the leasing to NYU. NYU isn't building it.

The Williamsburgh Bank clock works except the new LEDs that illuminate the hands don't. At least on the east face...
