Pies 'n' Thighs Goes Tits Up
It's a dark day for South Billyburg lovers of southern comfort food – dark as blackened catfish on a moonless Brooklyn night. Eater points out Peter Meehan's discovery that the beloved hole in the wall Pies 'n' Thighs, in the shadow of the Williamsburg bridge, will close tomorrow night. Party, or wake, to follow.
The closure has to do with some gripes on behalf of the reactionaries at the health department, such as the pork smoker the restaurant had used outside in the lot that doubled as al fresco dining. Seems those things are illegal in New York City, but it apparently wasn’t enough for Pies ‘n’ Thighs to get rid of it in November. The DOH is on their asses; the bottom line is that tomorrow’s your last chance to savor the homemade bread, fried catfish box, spicy mac ‘n’ cheese and rhubarb, key lime, and peanut butter pies that have caused lines out the door. (Gothamist has been braving those lines since ’06.)
A blow-softener of sorts is that a new laid-back Brazilian bar and restaurant, Favela, will be opening nearby within the next couple months. Also, the Pies 'n' Thighs owners vow to reopen in time for summer in South Williamsburg, and, according to their website, hopefully in a “bigger, better, more miraculous hole in the wall!”

Favela is a very tasteless name btw, it means shanty town, and favelas are where the poorest of the poor live.

Amazing. Yet they don't serve food or carry draught beer. Totally eliminates a ton of probable causes of hassles for them.
I used to work at Siberia till they closed in April. Same deal there. Plus they couldn't keep the plumbing or the heat on.
I am aware that "tits up" is a somewhat common phrase. You're still baiting the vulgar commenters, and you got some of the responses you were obviously looking for... Kind of pathetic, really... unless you're British and didn't know any better... And really, did you need to use the phrase "on their asses" -- it just makes you sound silly and uneducated.
However, Diane Keaton dropping the f bomb on GMA this morning was pretty fucking funny.
Don't worry folks. Pies and Thighs is just taking a bit of a break. This isn't the last of Pies and Thighs! They are coming back full force soon enough. You'll see.
I agree "tits up" is a bit much. I know the owner. It's not fair to her. This place is the JAM and a potential closing should be taken a little more seriously and with class.
