Camera in the Kitchen: The Smith

We’re not going to hesitate to echo the praises surrounding The Smith, 3rd Avenue‘s (between 10th & 11th) latest go-to spot (formerly a very-out-of-place Pizzeria Uno). Whether you’re hankering for a good pork chop, a unique cocktail, or some cheddar grits, The Smith fits the bill. The interior is spacious, though dark in the back far away from the windows, and the walls are decorated with subway tile and vintage nude photographs. Despite its size, if you go for brunch like we did, we recommend a pre-noon arrival, since word has caught on and the room fills up fast.

For brunch, eggs come in ten different combinations, some traditional (omelettes and benedict), others homey house specialties. We started with the country breakfast, a heaping serving of cheesy cheddar grits, which our dining companion happily noted tasted like “was definitely made with lots of butter.” Add to that plate two moist slices of ham, a homemade and slightly-sweet biscuit, and two eggs cooked to order. Gravy tops all; the combination is worth devouring.

The maple chicken sausage and eggs--another brunch specialty--layers eggs upon sausage patties upon subtly spiced corn bread, with more of the gravy ladled over and home fries, which admittedly could have been hotter with a bit more crisp. All brunches come with either fresh squeezed orange juice or a cocktail (after 12 noon); coffee is $3.00 for an unlimited cup.

Trips to the bathroom yielded oohs and ahhs (over the sinks), and like we said before: a spacious new comfort food restaurant in the East Village? We’ll be back for seconds.

The Smith is located at 55 Third Avenue between 10th & 11th Streets. 212-420-9800. Open for lunch and dinner, M-F and brunch and dinner on weekends.

Nice pix! Looks like finally a gothamist food writer got a decent camera and bothered to RTFM. Good job!

I was thinking the same thing, SP. These are by far the best food pics I've ever seen on Gothamist.

Some how ending a restaraunt discussing the "ooohs and ahhhs" of the bathroom just don't seem right.

Yeah a Pizzeria Uno is totally out of place on the ground floor of a college dorm.

I've been meaning to check this place out since I read a blurb about the opening a couple months ago on JuliB.com... now I really know I need to check it out.
