LECTURE: NYU and the Department of Sanitation present a trash talk tonight, titled: Gotham and its Garbage: A History of the Department of Sanitation. The illustrated lecture will include an exhibition tour and status report on the DSNY Museum-in-the-Making (which we wrote about last year). Robin Nagle, Ph.D., DSNY Anthropologist-in-Residence, and Haidy Geismar, Ph.D., Professor of Anthropology, NYU will both be there to lead the discussion.
6pm (also this Sunday at 6pm) // 136 W 20th St, 2nd Fl // Free
EVENT: Tonight Eoin Colfer, author of Benny and Omar -- his debut book about his personal experiences in Tunisia, will be on hand with his new book (there have been many in between) titled Airman. Sonically complimenting his reading, Nicole Atkins will fill out the night with tunes from her latest "pop-noir" album. Sure, she didn't show solidarity with the WGA by appearing on Conan the other night, but we'll let it slide.
7pm // Barnes & Noble [33 East 17th St] // Free
MUSIC: Very solid lineup at Union Hall tonight. The 1900's, Stevie Jackson (pictured, of Belle and Sebastian) and Laura Gibson all take the stage in the intimate space. Get there early, stay late, rock out.
8pm // Union Hall [702 Union St, Park Slope] // $12
THEATER: As if Under the Radar and Culturemart weren’t keeping us busy enough, P.S. 122 had to go ahead and schedule their annual COIL festival for the same week. The multidisciplinary series features a mix of premieres and return engagement productions in dance, theater and music. Tonight’s your chance to see The TEAM company’s Particularly in the Heartland, the award-winning show that Time Out NY calls “simultaneously intelligent, rueful, celebratory, delightful and devastatingly sad.” The inventively staged play wonders: “What if Robert F. Kennedy had survived the assassination in 1968? Why would citizens most harmed by domestic policies empower their government further? What happens when outsiders are allowed in?” – John Del Signore
9:30pm // P.S. 122 [150 First Ave] // Tickets cost $20.
DEBATE: Tonight Vice and Dewar's host a Debate, which seems...odd. It's gonna be Hippie vs Yuppie, Birkenstock vs Brooks Brothers, etc etc. Moderated by comedian Gabe Liedman, fellow comedians Max Silvestri and Lang Fisher will battle it out as hippie and yuppie (respectively). And this isn't your typical high school debate, DJ Never Forget will be spinning tunes all night long. Flyer here.
9:30pm // The Slipper Room [167 Orchard St] // Free
