Baby-Mauling Doberman Euthanized

2008_01_macb.jpgThe family dog who fatally bit an 8-month-old baby in Brooklyn was euthanized yesterday. According to the city, the family had requested the dog be euthanized.

On Thursday afternoon, the baby, Andrew Stein, was being watched by his grandmother in his parents' Kensington home. The 62-pound-dog Maccabee apparently bit the baby in the head when Andrew touched his paw. A police official told the NY Times that "infants are particularly vulnerable in such attacks because their skulls are soft and growing rapidly."

The baby's grandmother screamed for help because she wasn't able to get the dog off the baby. Neighbors finally managed to get the baby away from the dog and called 911. The building super Leonardo Collado said he saw "blood on the floor" and the dog was "banging, scratching the door inside the apartment" as he was kept there.

Andrew died on the way to the hospital, and the dog was taken into custody by Animal Care and Control. On Friday, Health Department officials said that the dog would be evaluated and then it would be determined whether the dog should be euthanized for public safety. It's unclear what the results of the evaluation were, but a statement said, "The dog was humanely euthanized at the Brooklyn Animal Care & Control shelter on Friday evening."

Neighbors said that Maccabee always seemed gentle and friendly. One told the Post, "He's a nice dog, the family dog. He wasn't aggressive. It's a terrible tragedy... You don't see this dog and say 'Oh, my God.' It wasn't aggressive. It was a gentle dog. I don't know what could have happened." And our commenter Responsible owner pointed out, from a CDC report, some facts to consider before getting a dog and noted that in 2005, per the National Canine Research Council, "In a SINGLE YEAR, 2005, more than FOUR TIMES as many New York State children died from maltreatment (abuse or neglect) than the TOTAL from ALL dog attacks in New York over the past 43 years."

Apples and Tangerines, imo.

not a good analogy. then I say, A baby never killed a dog in this State.
why are dog owners so fanboi-ish? they're as bad as Mac people.

This brings tears to my eyes. I simply cannot shake this story from my mind. The poor, poor baby. My chest literally aches for that child.

This is where I wish there were a superman actually capable of reversing time. That sounds silly, but this story is truly tragic. That child died well before his time unnecessarily.

I have to stop reading this shit.

This is the less sensational aspect of the story, shouldn't the 8-month old baby be in the crib? Or be cuddled or held by the grandmother? I wouldn't even leave an 8-month old with an 18 year old teenager. This has nothing to do with the dog or dogs and babies at all, it's all about parenting responsibilities and common sense. It's tragic that both the baby and dog are now dead because of this.

Hey, take that back or I'll chomp on you! I don't see you offering to give up your iPod. With apologies to GOP in comment [1], this is definitely "Apples and tangerines."

My sister was speculating that perhaps the dog was trying to pick the baby up by the back of the neck like it would a puppy, but didn't understand that you can't just DO that with a human baby. Then grandma comes in after leaving the room for, "just a minute," sees this, and probably makes the whole thing worse. It was just a bad situation, and just proof that you don't leave an 8 month old unattended ever, ever, ever.

hey, I have no dog in this fight,
I'm neither a dog owner nor an Ipod owner,
Just relaying my observations found from being on the internets 24/7. and as a resident in this city.

So sad about the baby, of course, but that grandmother's an idiot. Who leaves an infant ALONE with a dog??? That's just completely irresponsible.

maybe because of this quote,
Neighbors said that Maccabee always seemed gentle and friendly. One told the Post, "He's a nice dog, the family dog. He wasn't aggressive. It's a terrible tragedy... You don't see this dog and say 'Oh, my God.' It wasn't aggressive. It was a gentle dog. I don't know what could have happened."

this won't be the first time and it won't be the last. both in this type of statement and in outcome.

As an avid supporter of animals, who do not have the luxury of using their words, I feel that perhaps this dog was misinterpreted. The poor creature could have been trying to protect the baby in the way that he knew how.

Do you think the grandmother can live with herself? She probably wants to die. Mistakes happen and she is paying for her, I can guarantee that! She'll pay to the grave.

should this guy be euthanized as well?

No. only bad doggies. woof woof.

"Apples and Tangerines, imo."
"not a good analogy."

Well, dead is dead, I don't think it really matters to these children whether the dog or one of their parents killed them.

The point here I think is that animals (human and dogs) sometimes do terrible things - it's just that humans do terrible things a LOT more.
Facts are facts. Just because it's ugly, doesn't mean it's not a valid observation.
