As last night's Iowa caucuses heralded the beginning of the heated drive to presidential nominations and general election, news of Barack Obama's Democratic win and Mike Huckabee's Republican win is naturally front page material. The Daily News and Newsday both take "BAM" as their headlines, though the News focuses on Obama while Newsday offers a split Obama-Huckabee cover.
The NY Times has two large photographs of the winners, but emphasizes Obama's win a little more - which makes sense, given how it marks a disappointing night for Hillary Clinton. And the Post, oh, the Post, goes back to the Photoshop drawing board for an illustration of the Democratic results and Obama's "romp."
We'd also like to congratulate the tabloids for not putting Britney Spears' child custody dispute-turned-trip to the hospital for a medical evaluation because she was under the influence of something on the cover. They might run with it tomorrow, but at least politics can come before celeb news for today.

But thank you Gothamist for mentioning Britney anyway.
So let me get this straight,
A bunch of idiot midwesterners not only PRODUCED one of the most progressive and enlightened candidates in years (Barack Obama - Senator from Illinois) but also helped get him into the Primary (The voters of Iowa)!?!?!
What a bunch of retards!
I'm me-lt-ing !
buh-buy hillary
Matty,
How are the voters of midwesterners a "bunch of retards" for "Producing one of the most progressive and enlightened candidates in years"?
I live have lived in Both Illinois, Iowa, and New York city and of all three Iowa has the most knowledable voters. They vote for candidates not because they run the most ads on TV (like most elections in New Jersey), but on the issues and candidates ability to represent the country. So why is that retarded? I don't follow...
Bradedward, I think you missed Matty's sarcasm.
That's a hilarious picture of John Edwards.
I'm glad Huckabee is freaking out the GOP, and very glad Obama is doing so well. Now if he'd only hire Krugman...
Matty was being sarcastic.
Earlier post by Matty:
Iowa is not as hick as you all think it is. In fact most of the upper midwest is rather progressive and liberal. Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota are all consistently Democratic and have some of the most progressive politics in the nation. Barack Obama is representative of this fact.
Also I am willing to overlook the fact that Wisconsin voted in Joseph McCarthy providing they vote for Edwards or Obama this year.
Freaking out the GOP establishment? Yeah, but here's what Giuliani had to say:
"None of this worries me. September 11, there were times I was worried."
He's become a parody of himself.
None of the GOP candidates are very compelling.
If the Democrats manage to nominate Obama, I don't think anyone from the GOP field has much of a chance. If Clinton is the nominee, the race will be much closer- GOP would probably turn out in droves just to vote against her.
unforuntately, i dont think either obama or clinton will lead to a democratic victory. all that is needed is some type of security threat around the time of the election and the republican political machine coming online to capitalize and we're back to republican control. both candidates sans media hype do not provide any level of confidence and using a few thousand votes from activists in 1 primary does not make for a realistic look at how things will turn out.
It is a shame that none of the people running for President should be President. They are all political hacks. Plus, Iowa isn't really a good barometer of the political playing field anyway.
For Hillary supporters to read it, it would need to be printed in braille.
Anyone running for President would be deemed a political hack. There would be no other way for them to be there...
TWEEDLEDEE
Barack Obama's on his way
To making the White House scene,
A juggernaut that can't be stopped,
Like President Howard Dean.
The only thing I know is if America ever makes me have to say" Huckabee," I'm going to be mad.
Maybe we should pass over the baby boomer generation altogether. All they have given us is a Potempkin village of McMansions, a perpetuation of pyramid scheme social entitlements, divorce rates that trivialize the family (gay, straight, or otherwise), and foreign policy that could very well have been engineered to fail. It's not partisan, they're all equally incompetent. I am very conservative (for a new yorker), I'd sooner die than vote for Hillary. And while I may disagree with many of Obama's fundamental platform positions, at least his visage contains a flicker of hope. He might be the Democrat equivalent of Reagan. I hope to God that "it's morning in America again." It has been midnight for too damn long.
amen eoin. no offense but the boomers were the most spoiled generation. that's about it.
the boomers are going down.
