The Broadway actor who faced sexual misconduct charges towards a minor has pleaded guilty to avoid being classified a sex offender. James Barbour, who has played swains like Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre and the Beast in Beauty & the Beast, now faces 60 days in prison, three years probation, and a number of requirements similar to those of registered sex offenders.
Per the plea deal, Barbour confessed to the crimes in court yesterday. In 2001, the then-15-year-old girl first met Barbour when she went to see Jane Eyre with her parents (the backstage visit had been arranged by her drama teacher). From the Post, which accurately calls the testimony "graphic":
"I placed my hand - I mean her hand," Barbour continued, flubbing his line, "on my p- - -s and my hand on her v- - - -a."As part of his sentencing, Barbour must undergo sex-offender treatment and cannot visit areas frequented by children (playgrounds, Internet chat rooms, schools) unless he gets permission from his probation officer. Additionally, the NY Times notes that he must "inform the manager, producer or assistant director of any theatrical, film or television project he works in that he has been convicted of endangering the welfare of a child, 'having engaged in oral sexual conduct and sexual contact with a 15-year-old child.'""On her what?" asked the court stenographer, leaning in to hear him.
"On her v- - - -a," he repeated helpfully, projecting more clearly.
Barbour next admitted to a second romp with the girl, this one a month later in his West 98th Street apartment.
"We engaged in oral sexual conduct. I knew she was 15," he said.
Barbour's lawyer Ronald Fischetti had claimed the woman, now 22 years old and an actress, filed charges because Barbour inherited money after his mother's death. Fischetti had also previously proposed setting up an 800 number so other people could call in and say whether the victim had accused them of sexual abuse. Fischetti is still seeking permission to print her name so he can run ads asking as much.

Barbour sounds like a total scumbag. If he wasn't a white guy with decent lawyers, would be in the slammer right now.
But, the victim taking so long to file a complaint seems to stink a little -- especially since it looks like there's a bit of newly found cash on Barbour's part, and a lack of money on her part. Now that he's admitted guilt in criminal court, the civil case will be easy.
And this Fischetti guy definitely will be going to hell for this 800 scam.
I'm sorry - what? The Post won't print the words "penis" and "vagina"?
"Flubbing his line," though - that's pretty funny.
I've got a problem believing this story.
I mean, the guy's a Broadway actor and he's straight? Come on...;)
Doesn't surprise me the victim didn't report it right away- she was a minor, she probably viewed the event as a romantic relationship (a Broadway actor shows interest in you, treats you like a woman- of course that will sway a minor! Children are impressionable, that's why we have laws to protect them from things like this). Over time, she probably realized how young she had actually been, and how Mr. Barbour took advantage of her. No one should blame the victim- the only person who did something wrong here with Mr. Barbour.
I got a blowjob from a 15-year-old girl. Knocked her up too. Except I was also 15 at the time, so when I'm in a Broadway play it won't say in the Playbill description next to my name:
"[JenChungsBra] is a sex offender and should be considered hazardous to the health of all the underage girls in the theater -- please do not take your daughter backstage to meet [JenChungsBra]."
i wonder if he was wearing his Beast costume at the time of fondling.
Jane Eyre was about 15 when she met Rochester. I blame all this book learnin'.
