With New York City Crime at New Lows for 2007, Operation Impact Will Double

While announcing that overall felony crime in 2007 is down 6% versus last year, Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Kelly proclaimed that the city is on pace "is on course to set a new record in crime reduction" - to have the fewest number of murders "since records have been kept." The city expects the murder rate will be below 500 (as of Wednesday 7:30AM, there have been 484 reported murders), which is the lowest since 1963's 548 murders. Some other stats:

Overall major felony crime is also down 26% since 2001. Mayor Bloomberg said, "When I came into office, many believed it was impossible to drive crime, particularly murders, down any further. Yet, beginning in 2002, crime declined steadily and murders fell below 600 annually for the first time in 40 years. That happened again in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. Now, in 2007, we have reached another milestone, murders could potentially fall below 500 - and that includes a decrease in random murders where victims don't know the perpetrators." In other words, take that, Rudy!

Even with the good news, the city announced that 914 new police recruits will join Operation Impact, essentially doubling the number of officers. There was suggestion that Operation Impact might be "stripped down" because of a lack of resources (recruiting problems, stemming from low pay), but now the program will be focused on decreasing crime in areas with persistent issues, like "Brownsville, Bedford-Stuyvesant and parts of downtown Brooklyn and Fort Greene," per the Times. The NYPD will monitor Operation Impact "daily" and redeploy officers to other areas if needed.

i wonder about the number of recruits, since there is a graduation today and only about 650 are graduating.

I think these stats are a strong indication of the socio-economic change that has taken place in NY over the last 15 years.

Neighborhoods that were crime-riddled in 1992 are now among the most desirable and expensive. That means the residents are less-likely to be criminals.

At least not the gun-toting kind.

Interesting photo. Notice as the NYPD is discussing the drop in crime and congratulating themselves, Russian assassin Yuri Popokova slips by them unnoticed coming out of the subway.

It's hard to buy bullets to kill people when the rent keeps going up and up and up.

PR Pimp (#2) is right - the statistics reflect more of a socio-economic-cultural change than an improved police performance.

Per the picture above - I guess in the near future we can expect to see even more cops standing around and chatting.

Maybe the bottom percentage of police academy grads shouldn't be allowed to have firearms, just whistles. It's a bit scary to think that some people make it through by the skin of their teeth.

Its probably a mix of easier abortions, higher rents, more gentrification, and better policing. Whatever it is, less crime is a good thing. Better to spend money on rent than bullets. But which comes first, the chicken or the egg? Less crime, means an area is more desireable and can command higher rents. Higher rents mean richer people, who aren't interested in committing street crime, selling drugs, etc. The US dollar is so low now that well-off Europeans and Brits can get some serious discounts on buying properties here. So maybe that's helped too.

Some criminals can't afford to stay here, so they move somewhere else and commit crimes there. Other criminals who maybe own property I think probably just gave up committing crimes. It doesn't pay as good anymore I think. I mean if you can sell your apartment for some serious cash because you're neighborhood (which used to be a shithole) is gentrifying, why bother selling drugs, or robbing or somethin?

Anyway, nyc is booming now. We're insulated from this housing crisis, our crime is down, we got a pretty good mayor, and the tourism economy is doing incredible because of the low dollar. It's so packed with tourists now. I bet loads of europeans discovered that you can have a vacation in nyc + buy christmas presents for not much more than just staying at home in europe and buying presents there.

The question not addressed in the 1,530 Times piece is whether or not neighborhoods where Impact has come and gone maintain the lower crime rates. Citywide or even precinct-wide crime stats don't tell this story. I have a post on this on the West Bronx Blog ... http://westbronxnews.blogspot.com/2007/12/impact-expanded-but-do-results-last.html

Are they still towing aroud that eye in the sky crane contraption to hot spots?

FYI, get ready for a boom in crime. All the criminals who were locked up 5 to 10 years ago for violent felonies, are getting out of jail right about now. Probably a few realeased every day. Guess what these people go once they get out of jail? Do you think they get jobs and wake up at 7 am every morning, put in a full day's work and get home at 7 pm like most people? NOPE, they get up whenever they want, slang some crack and possibily rob a few people here and there! Right back to their old tricks.

I know its unfortunate, but just look at the recidivism rates they are through the roof.
