On the weekend of January 5th and 6th, dozens of spots in all five boroughs will be thick with the powerful aroma of fir tree mulch. Yes, it's time once again for the Parks Department's MulchFest! This year's twelfth annual MulchFest looks to be mulch bigger than last year, with almost a hundred different locations where New Yorkers can bring their discarded Christmas trees to be ground into wood chips. The Parks Department encourages people to bring their own bags and walk away with as much free mulch as they desire.
The Fest kicks off at 10am and ends at 2pm both days. Participants must remember to remove all lights, ornaments, and decorations prior to drop off. The full list of locations in all five boroughs is here.
And if you can’t make it to MulchFest ‘08, the city will be picking up for composting clean holiday trees left at the curb from Thursday, January 3rd through Wednesday, January 16th. But there’s no mulch for you if you do it that way – all that mulch goes to city parks.

What do Big Apple apt dwellers need with mulch? Perhaps Kitty litter??
Mulch is in high demand by community gardens, street trees, and property owners who haven't yet paved their yards. All of us (including you, daddy d) benefit from this in several ways: 1) mulch helps soil retain rain water so it doesn't flood the subway system and pollute our waterbodies; 2) mulch nourishes trees and plants that filter the air we all breathe (even you, daddy d); and 3) mulching trees keeps them out of the sanitation system, which saves all of us taxpayers (probably not including you, daddy d) lots of $$$$.

I was happy to get your primer on mulch and I can see that you've been covered by a layer of that protective compostable material for some time. I'm pleased that you have emerged, if only to be impolite.
By the way, my Grandmother kept a pot of chives on her East 70th Street tenement window sill and used horse droppings for fertilizer.
Perhaps you might learn something from that.
And a real question; is all the mulch used??
