Stores were packed with post-Christmas shoppers, as retailers marked down their products in hopes of boosting holidays sales. So far, holiday period sales are up 3.6%, which is the "lower end" of expectations according to MasterCard Advisors.
The question is, will marking down a part of $1,380 shoes to $150 or $1,500 Gucci purses to $750 at Saks Fifth Avenue help? Well, given that people were waiting for doors to open and "not walking - they were running" into the Manhattan location, we'd say it's got to help a little.
Shoppers were also rushing to redeem gift cards, which is a good thing as about 10% of the $80 billion spent on gift cards last year went unredeemed, or returning items they really hated.
Did you go shopping yesterday? Did you return, redeem or nab a good deal?

shopped, redeemed, and nabbed.
Hmm, women don't seem to have a problem carrying those totes from Victoria's Secret? Interesting...
Gift cards are the biggest scam. I have gift cards from two years ago I haven't fully redeemed yet. And to get the full value off the card you have to put up some of your own money (unless you buy something that equals the exact amount of the card). Retailers must love selling gift cards more than anything else.
Gift cards are a huge scam, no doubt. You know what's an even huger scam. Christmas. If you notice, at least 80% of what you see in all popular media regarding x-mas has to do with shopping and spending money. No one is even trying to pretend there is anything meaningful about x-mas, even the people who are x-tians. You want to see the spirit of x-mas? Swing by Century 21 anytime in December and watch as mother's choke each other out of Juicy couture jeans for their spoiled children. It's shame. The new tagline for x-mas should be, 'Hi G-d, thanks for the I-pod'.
Bitter, party of one, Ms. Dickinson? Sheesh. I had a really awesome Christmas, spent lots of quality time with loved ones. Did most of my shopping online and avoided all the madness. Dealing with airport crowds is not fun, but it's worth it to be with one's family and celebrate. If Century 21 and the like are so upsetting, maybe you shouldn't go there during crowded times. Just an idea...

Bitter and honest are two very different strains of thought.
And why is Christmas a national holiday? We have national holidays for exactly five people in the USA: Christopher Columbus, Martin Luther King Jr., the presidents Washington and Lincoln, and Jesus Christ. It's the only religious holiday that's also a national one.

Man, I'm really sorry for all the unhappy, crabby Gothamist commenters... it's too bad you don't seem to have enough joy in your lives. Maybe next year!
