When the weather outside is frightful, the risks are likely predictable--in high-wind weather anyway. Early yesterday evening, witnesses report that wooden planks broke free from a crane and crashed onto Spring St. at the new Trump SoHo building, reportedly crashing atop several cars. A collapse of steel from a crane at the WTC site early last week crushed a construction trailer where an architect was seriously injured when pieces of steel demolished his workspace after falling dozens of floors.
The accident last week occurred when a nylon swing broke and dropped the steel girders nearly 25 stories onto the site of the former World Trade Center. Details about yesterday's evenings are less clear, other than a report of scaffolding and planks falling from the top of the building falling into traffic.
Trump started building the semi-residential/hotel building [Warning: the site is flash-heavy with an emphasis on loud annoying music] on Spring St. recently amidst community opposition. Many neighbors were unenthusiastic about the construction of Trump's skyscraper in a formerly low-rise neighborhood, although it could spur economic development. The larger-than-life real estate mogul, casino owner, and television star defended his good name in a letter to the Wall Street Journal last week.

such weird little editorials from Gothamist
...unenthusiastic about the...skyscraper in a formerly low-rise neighborhood, although it could spur economic development.....

pls check yourself
Could spur economic development? Since when is Soho in need of having economic development spurred?
I believe they are talking Hudson Square development here not SoHo which of course the building is not located in.
There's nothing editorial about either of those statements. Some neighbors strenuously object to the construction of a skyscraper in their neighborhood. Other people feel that replacing a parking lot with a residential building will produce jobs and generate business for surrounding businesses.
As per the description of Trump, that seems fairly literal and accurate for a man who puts his name on every building he constructs and hosts a reality tv show. I'm not sure I understand the objections.
I could probably string together a number of 5 word statements of fact, without providing any context to a story, but that would make Gothamist look like the emergency wire Newsmap. I recommend it for more concise news.
it was a nylon SLING, to the best of my knowledge (and yes, I have a little knowledge about rigging systems) there is no such thing as a nylon swing
This would not have been a problem if the building was made out of inflatable materials as i suggested to them.
I am firmly convinced that developers cut corners so they can maximize their profits. This seems to be more evidence of it.
I was in one of the 4 cars that got smashed by what the construction manager says was a falling aluminum scaffold yesterday 12/23. It scared the c--p out of me. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
Meistersinger, developers are cheap and they do cut corners, but had you poked your head out of your cave yesterday, you might have noticed that there were powerful and frequent gusts of wind. Unless you have absolutely everything battened down, things are going to go flying off of an unenclosed building when the wind starts whipping like that 10+ floors off the ground.
And the accident at the Goldman-Sachs involved a sling (as tartugas mentioned) and steel studs...

maybe they were trying to get home early,
everyone slacks off during the holidays.
wind, schmind, it's wintaa time.
Dave Hogarty, please stop writing that the GS HQ that is being built is on the former WTC site. It is not. It is on a former parking lot that was in front of the BPC multiplex close to the WFC and across the WSH from the former WTC site.
