Saleswoman's Shopping Spree at Bloomie's Ends in Arrest

200712bloomies.jpg'Tis the season to...steal from your workplace? The NY Sun reports that the Manhattan district attorney's office is prosecuting a case against a Bloomingdale's employee who created bogus gift cards.

The complaint says Jennifer Ng, a 22-year-old Queens resident, cheated the East Side store out of $34,515 during the nearly month-long scam.

It says Bloomingdale's sales receipts were the key element of Ms. Ng's alleged scheme.

After a shopper made a purchase, she would regenerate the receipt. She would then make phony merchandise returns and use the credit to create the gift cards, according to the complaint.

Ng used 36 receipts in total to generate the thousands of dollars in gift cards in only 8 days, and was arrested for the scam soon after. Police found some of the gift cards in her wallet upon her arrest and she was charged with third-degree larceny and second-degree forgery. How many years in jail is this shopping spree worth? Lucky number 7. Ng will return to court in March to find out if she'll be doing the time.

We wonder how many "big brown bags" she stuffed before she was caught.

I have to say, that's a pretty clever scam. I mean, this took some thinking! If she was smart enough to come up with this, she ought to study while she's in jail and make something of herself when she gets out. Maybe she ought to work to catch people like herself! She simply used her brains for evil instead of good.

And I do think it's a shame that racial stereotypes are being used to make fun here. It's not a very attractive reflection of the level of registered commentors.

No way! Jennifer Ng!? Anyways, that's grand larceny, so her poor parents will have to drop off her Dim Sum at Riker's...

A while back, another saleswoman at Bloomies was caught with a hand-held scan which she used to scan customer's credit card numbers. A foreign tourist became suspicious when he noticed her scanning his credit card and notified the store.

Looks like Bloomie's loss prevention staff is kept busy.

    I thought Asians were smart.

Seriously, these are Bloomie's gift cards. Someone surely had to start noticing her suddenly making an awful lot of purchases with gift cards eventually. It was a rather crafty plan, but yes, her swift greed doomed her. Everyone eventually gets caught with this stuff, but the smart ones can last 2 years.

Someone get her myspace/facebook/friendster profile up, s'il vous plait.

$34,515 in 1 month? nobody will notice that, nope.

greed always ruins a good plan.
