Get Ready to Work Out, Williamsburg

200712gymwburg.jpgWhile Williamsburg may have a lot to offer in the way of bars, restaurants and luxury condos...it's been lacking in one area: gyms. It looks like soon enough the void will be filled, enter Soma Health Club.

A call inquiring about fees has not been returned yet, but expect to pay more than you would at the Metropolitan Pool & Fitness Center. Housed in an old theater located at 107 South 6th Street here's what we do know so far about the "full-service luxury health club":

  • 16,000 square feet of loft-style floor space
  • State-of-the-art spin room
  • Private yoga room
  • Atrium stretch room
  • Sauna and steam rooms

We walked by and the construction fence is now down, with tons of promo encouraging "early registration" in the windows (they've also been flyering cars all around the neighborhood). Soma is poised to open in January 2008 -- just in time for those New Year's resolutions!

but we are all already so hot, this place will never fly....

the site says one is opening in the Bronx in the spring and has construction photos, but i couldn't find an address. i would love a fitness place anywhere near me. not many here were I live...

Also featuring a 21,000 Sq. Foot pillow fighting arena.

Please someone name one fat hipster that needs to work off pounds on his/her soy-based non-fat organic tobacco stained body.

Seriously, I declare my 2008 to be "Hipster Free"

Dude69 -- you forgot to add 'coke-nosed'.

In Aldous Huxley's dystopian novel Brave New World, Soma is the popular dream-inducing drug which is employed by the government as a method of control through pleasure and immediate availability. It is ordinary among the culture of the novel for everyone to use it for whatever various practices: sex, relaxation, concentration, confidence. It is seemingly a single-chemical combination of many of today's drugs' effects, giving its patients the full hedonistic spectrum.
Another gold star for Wikipedia.

Here's some actual news: At the corner of Union and Roebling, a developer is tearing down 5 Roebling—and compromising the integrity of the building that abuts it. The construction co. has been violating a stop-work order, and the city is doing nothing. More details at the Gowanus Lounge blog and the Bad Advice blog.
