Caught on Tape: Cops Retain Cocaine
Detective Sean Johnstone of the Brooklyn South Narcotics Unit was arrested yesterday along with police officer Julio Alvarez in connection to 11 missing bags of cocaine that Johnstone seized in a drug bust. The detective was caught talking about the drugs when he forgot that he was wearing a wire for an undercover operation and he recorded himself talking about them to Alvarez.
The officers were caught after Johnstone unknowingly left a wire that he was wearing turned on. The two officers were heard talking to a third unnamed officer about a drug bust and how they confiscated 28 bags of cocaine, but only turned in 17 of them.Johnstone was also recording repeatedly using the N-word in reference to black people. Both Alvarez and Johnstone were arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court yesterday on charges of official misconduct and filing false documents. No drug charges have been filed yet, as the NYPD's internal affairs unit investigates if the cocaine actually went missing. The cops have been suspended without pay.

Uh... whoops.
Hopefully, the dirty cops will be fired from their job, fined, and due time for their crimes. I hate corrupt gov't employees, be they cops, judges, DA's, building inspectors, health inspectors, ad nauseum.
Give the guys a break they were only joking. They miscounted the bags the first time around.
"Johnstone was also recording repeatedly using the N-word in reference to black people"
I KNOW!!! That's the worst part of the story!!! Because that has become the worst thing anybody can do these days. He could have been fisting a puppy too, but the main part of the story would have been the fact he said the n word.
just another day in the life of the typical NYPD officer.
next case...
"He could have been fisting a puppy"... Now THAT would be something to catch on tape.
The repeated use of the N-word is an important part of the story because of the (sometimes all too apparent) perception that NYPD has racist thugs among it's ranks.
The city is employing these bonehead idiots to work as undercover agents?
I would like to announce today's Darwin Award recipient: Detective Sean Johnstone of the New York Police Department... C
Mazel Tov!!!
*he forgot that he was wearing a wire*
Everyone knows cops love cocaine and alcohol. Why? Because cocaine leaves a persons system in three days and alcohol in one day.
simple.

Low pay, the inability to keep experienced people from jumping ship to suburban departments (bad working conditions as well as $), and poor screening of candidates for the job all are going to result in a deluge of corruption cases in the next decade. I wouldn't be surprised if there's even a federal takeover of (parts of) the NYPD.
Years ago, parking tickets (even if they were paid) or a speeding ticket could disqualify a candidate from getting on the job. Keeping company with a less than stellar crowd also could result in you getting the boot, even if you never had been in trouble.
Nowadays, there are people with assault, petit larceny, and DUI convictions passing background checks and becoming cops. There have even been people here from foreign countries with shady pasts who were waived on in, just to make sure that academy classes could be filled -- too much work to vet them, too much need for warm bodies to fill seats. When too many people flunk out of the academy, grades get curved to turn Fs into Ds. And the physical fitness requirements are totally out the window.
Garbage in, garbage out. Between the real criminals smartening up and going back to their old tricks, and the PD rotting from the inside, the city will be headed down the crapper all over again.
Is Johnstone white or black?
@ edex:
The Darwin Award requires that a person die (or at least sterilize himself or herself) as a result of his or her own stupidity without having procreated. You know, the whole theory of "natural selection" that Darwin developed? These bozos don't qualify.
NYPD Rant should have fun with this mess.
which is why they're "New York's Finest" not "New York's Brightest"
On the news last night, they said the two cops are from the Greenpoint precinct station -- the one on Meserole across the street from the YMCA.
I think that not only is it the quality of the candidates, the job itself creates a disconnected reality from what life is like on the other side of "the force." As long as you have a gun and a badge you are invincible, no one can touch you lest they want to be cornered by a dozen cops and peppered with bullets.
Who came up with, and why are they called "New York's Finest?" Since when does eating take out Chinese food sitting in a sector car make you fine? I would have said doughnuts, but that would have been too obvious.
Sean all of our thought are with you right now and wishing you the best. To know Sean, he is not what you are reading, there is more to this story. Do not be quick to judge not knowing the whole story.
Racial slurs why bring that up in this article, to stir up trouble because everyone jumps on the band wagon of how terrible it is, enough already.
Regardless of the situation should the guy that was busted get out of trouble, NO. He still had the stuff and was busted.
PS - why would it matter if he is black or white?
Julio all of our prayers are with you on this very crazy time and place of what's happening right now. Just remember keep your head up....everything will be okay....
P.S. Nobody should be talking stupidity because ya don't know what really went on...you guys want to beleive what the news reporters talk about but you all know very well that they like to exagerate on whatever happens.
It's true why bring racial slurs to this article?
