It looks like the World Trade Center Memorial has hit a delay. Originally scheduled to open on September 11, 2009, the Port Authority said today that it won't be ready until 2011, the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. The delays only came to light after construction began and the agency could give a more realistic timeline. A Port Authority spokeswoman said, "We see the reality, and want to operate on responsible timelines. We'll work as aggressively as possible to complete the project as soon as possible."
When construction started in 2006, it was thought that the memorial would open in 2009 and the Ground Zero museum would open a year later. Now, they are supposed to open at the same time in 2011. The memorial was also delayed and had its original design altered after estimated costs reached $1 billion. The original design for Reflecting Absence, designed by a NYCHA architect, was chosen in 2004. Not even the help of Mayor Bloomberg was able to keep the memorial on schedule. Alas, such is the nature of construction.

If they just rebuilt the WTC to what it once was (but a bit taller) we would fix the skyline and have a memorial that could be seen from all over the city instead of some rubbish modern architecture that is about 99% bullshit and 1% design.
This is so f'n sad it's unreal. Sometimes this city really has its head up its ass. Get it done, jesus.
It's those damn families of 911 - no one want's to upset them (can you say lawsuit boys and girls?) They think they have a monopoly on loss related to that day and no matter what their whim's design, they are really getting to be a pain in the arse.
They really need to get over it, and move on... Stopping development on current structures so as to conduct study groups and polls to make sure nobody's feelings are getting hurt is getting way out of hand.
I feel the proper place for a 9/11 memorial is high in the sky - 110 stories up - in the exact same air space that they lived in, not in some festering hole on Manhattan's lower west side where their lifeless bodies ended up.

And while we're at it, we could rebuild the world's tallest building on that hallowed ground (seriously). Not some half building-half sculpture bullshit design that doesn't go all the way up!
Oh sure, let's make our skyline look just like Tulsa, OK or any other metropolitan area with a really tall tower of some frilly architectural design that serves some violent dropping-entertainment-like purpose. (looks like an amusement park)
Besides, the current design looks like Leibeskind's wire penis in concrete and steel a la Manhattan - ugh.
Who's penis tapers like that anyway? ew.

The later the better. Why are we in such a tearing hurry to get the memorial finished? Are the 3000 victims of 9/11 so much more important than the men who gave their lives in our (just) wars? Look at how long it took to get the WWII memorial in Washington. Nearly 60 years! Slow down, get some perspective. Nothing worth doing right is worth rushing.
It's somewhat frustrating to see all the assholes involved in this process of building a memorial for 9/11. One billion to dig a hole and put a ramp down to that hole? Isn't that a bit of an over run for what's going on? It's just two holes with a bunch of trees. For god sakes just do it and stop fucking around. How much does a tree cost?
Great. So much time/money spent on a place most NYers are never gonna visit or see.
Good thing for Gov. Spitzer. Anyone associated with Ground Zero development will be disgraced, from the governor, mayor, and contractors on down. The memorials will probably be a fiasco, freezing in winter, etc, and who knows about the Freedom Tower finances. Now its the next governor's problem.
