Strangers Save Woman Pushed into Subway Tracks

2007_12_14thst.jpgA woman shoved into the Brooklyn-bound Q train tracks at Union Square was saved by two bystanders on Monday night. Suzanne Trotman only suffered bruises as she was pulled from the tracks less than a minute before a train pulled in.

Two people, a man and a woman, jumped into the tracks to help Trotman out. Trotman told the Post she 'got up really quickly," adding, "Good thing I didn't get knocked out... I kept telling myself, 'I'm not going to die like this.'" When the train pulled in, others stopped the person who apparently pushed her from getting on board.

Police arrested 24-year-old Tenesha Thompson for reckless endangerment and assault. Witnesses say she seemed to be talking to herself, saying, "You don't know what she did to me," repeatedly. And Trotman wants to thank the two Good Samaritans who helped her out of the tracks safely, "You hear stories of things like this, but you don't think it can ever happen to you."

At the beginning of the year, a man jumped into the subway tracks when a young man had a seizure and fell. Wesley Autrey covered the man's body with his own as a train passed above them and turned into a hero for all of us.

It looks like Tenesha forgot to get her prescription for Risperdal filled after being discharged from Bellevue...

As punishment, Tenesha should be pushed onto a track and given half a minute to get herself to safety... and it should be televised... and the train they send toward her could have advertising all over it so that there would be no need for commercials, just riveting 'reality' television.

Tenesha should be put in front of a train now...

"You don't know what she did to me?" How much do you want to bet she bumped her while walking past her on the platform or 'looked at her wrong?'

People really need to keep it in check and realize they live in a small area with 8 million other people and they should stop acting like animals already. If this is the next generation we are in deep s**t.

It's ridiculous to charge her with something so minor. Pushing someone onto subway tracks should be considered attempted murder.

I have to agree, Peter; this isn't like pushing someone down on open ground. You only push someone in frotnt of a subway to kill them. That being said, I'm guessing, from the description of her behaviour and remarks, that she's a bit bonkers, so it may be moot.

I agree Peter. Attempted murder is the correct charge.

BTW, if you ever find yourself for whatever reason on the tracks in a station as the train's arriving, go under the platform. The edge of the platform hangs over the tracks and you can go under there safely.

I agree with you, MT. I have noticed an attitude on the subways that if you barely touch someone, they shove back, hard -- and, as we see here in this story, dangerously. We're on the fucking subway, here, people. If you don't like other people to accidentally brush against you, get the fuck out of the city.

Bravo to those strangers for jumping down to help that woman. How many people would be willing to do that?

People, this is what happens when you stand near the platform reading your paper or listening to your iPod oblivious to your surroundings. And yes, this is NYC so the victim deserves partial blame...

Can anybody tell us what kind of sentence you can get for reckless endangerment and assault? Fines? Any jail time at all?

Pushing someone onto the subway tracks is not just "reckless", it is a deadly act. This girl should be punished accordingly.

Attempted murder seems right.
Remember, there is 600 volts of direct current with the third rail. That will kill you.

I agree with Toby and Peter. Attempted murder or manslaughter seems to be the best crime this woman should be charged with. She could have broken her neck or been electrified by the third rail, let alone be run over by a train. I am terrified of this happening to me, so I am always looking over my shoulder and holding onto the columns...

Attempted murder, reckless assault? Isn't that all pretty much moot when the defendant is a paranoid schizophrenic..?

Sadly I had the misfortune of seeing someone get hit by a train when I was a teenager (it was a suicide though, the guy literally jumped on the tracks as teh train pulled up), so I would say attempted murder would be appropriate.

I think it is unrealistic to expect people to NOT entertain themselves (reading, listening to music) while waiting for and riding the subway. Should we all just dumbly stare into space? I commute at least an hour each way every day, and would lose my mind without some sort of stimulation. Wouldn't it be more appropriate to punish those who push people on the tracks? Blaming the victim in a case like this makes zero sense.

Whatever did happen to that little fat jewish guy who pushed that woman over at the 34th St station a while back? I believe some new legislation has been passed since then?

Sounds like attempted manslaughter - of the voluntary kind, but I'm not a lawyer.

I wonder if Tanesha is mentally impaired or just someone who, as Dave Chapelle would say - Tanesha was just 'keepin it real'.

ED Continue doing what you're doing - the world is your oyster...lol

Not true. The third-rail "shoes" of the train stick far enough into the area under the platform to eliminate any survival space. And note that the shoes are electrically charged even though the third rail would be on the other side of the train.

Then I guess my friend -- an MTA track worker -- was lying.

I've noticed a lot of blacks talk to themselves in that angry, "I'll kill you bitch!", kind of way.

I'm just sayin'.

I think the headlines should read "A Black Male and Hispanic Female save Jewish Woman pushed onto tracks by black Woman."

otherwise it might be easy to miss this story.

i don't know what is up with gothamist's servers lately, but they have a major case of the suck. it's impossible to post here.

The 3rd rail shoes only stick out a couple more inches than the width of the train, so you should be ok.

The best thing to do is run the direction the train is arriving until beyond the platform, if you're able.

If someone is seizing in the tracks, you can also go to either end of the platform, walk down the stairs into the track, and pull the switch near the blue light, which will cut the power.

@bmmdan

yeah, and then i also want it to be spun into some sort of epic tale of the triumph of the oppressed races putting aside their difference in a battle against christian neo-nazi skinheads.

and i want a made for tv movie out of this.

@matty

Homicide: Life on the Streets aired an episode called "Subway" (Season 6, Episode #84) about a man (Vincent D'Onofrio) pushed onto the subway tracks between cars. His spine is severed from being crushed between a car and the platform, so he is lucid and without pain except for the the knowledge that his extraction will kill him. Detective Pembleton (Andre Braugher) arrives to investigate what will soon become a homicide case and has to comfort the victim while conducting his investigation. Great drama. (2nd post attempt)

Ah, yes...the classic "conscious person stuck between the train and platform who's going to die when the train is moved" scenario. Quick, call the family to come down and say a tearful goodbye. Didn't Mel Gibson's wife die in a similar situation in the movie "Signs," except she was pinned to a tree by a car?

Wesley Autrey lives in my building and he is a good man and neighbor everyday, saw him going to what seemed like a construction job the other day, looked like tough work for a hero.

I was just looking over my shoulder today to make sure someone doesnt do that to me as my 1 or 3 train pulls into the station.

Attempted murder, reckless assault? Isn't that all pretty much moot when the defendant is a paranoid schizophrenic..?

No, no, man, her name is Tenesha, okay? Nobody who visits this site gives a damn about her mental state, okay? Te-ne-sha.

Landor,

that episode of H: LotCs was made into a documentary about the production process of a tv episode, and was probably one of the best episodes of a superlative tv drama ever. Nice reference!

D'onofrio's following work has paled in comparison; I doubt he'll ever match it. Braugher has also never been better, though I'm sad to say he gets few opportunities to match himself in that context.

Spear Chucker is joking, right? Lame, dude. Really. Tenesha or whatever her name is probably nuts-even if the lady did bump into her-who the hell tries to kill someone for bumping into them?? She's probably sick, which while it doesn't warrant much sympathy from me, makes a hell of a lot more sense than "she just got pissed that a woman bumped into her". Normal people don't talk to themselves. (in public anyway)

We have just had a similar case near London. A woman was pushed off the platform and onto the tracks just for asking two youths to stop smoking. (In the UK it is now illegal to smoke in public places). She received burns from the live rail.
Perhaps flogging should be reintroduced as it is probably the only thing these morons would understand. There are just no standards anymore and life gets more like a Mad-Max movie every day (crime, scams, and insurance companies that don't pay, dishonest police as well!) Cest la vie!
