Feds Supboena Sharpton, His Aides Over Financials

2007_12_alsharpton.jpgAt 6:30AM yesterday morning, federal agents delivered "wake-up" subpoenas to the Reverend Al Shaprton and four of his employees at the National Action Network. The FBI and IRS are looking for financial and corporate records, some dating back to 2001, as part of an investigation into Sharpton's financing of his 2004 presidential campaign as well as allegations of tax fraud.

Ten people in total were subpoenaed, including a former chief of staff who left in 1998. Carl Redding told the Daily News, "It was like a sting or a raid. They converged on everybody.” Naturally, Sharpton is angry, as he denied any wrongdoing. From the Post:

Here we go again," said Sharpton, who claimed that prior probes have suspiciously come to public light when he was in the midst of making political moves. "This is more smearing.

"I'm getting ready to make a presidential endorsement," noted Sharpton, who sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004.

"How many state and federal investigations have you been through with me? Whatever it is, it's part of the territory. I'm a public figure."

This morning, at the National Action Network's headquarters, Sharpton said, '“Every major civil rights leader I can think of — from Martin Luther King Jr. to Marcus Garvey to Adam Clayton Powell — has had to face this kind of harassment. I certainly am not in their league, but I certainly expected that that would become my lot.”

Recently, the Detectives Endowment Association suggested that Sharpton was "purchasing testimony" for witnesses and survivors in the Sean Bell shooting, but the National Action Network has said it's supporting the victims through victims compensation funds. And back in 1993, Sharpton pleaded guilty for failing to file a tax return in 1986, which is a misdemeanor.

As much as I despise this racist fraud of a "reverend," both state and federal tax authorities are probably the worst abusers of power in government. They can seize money and assets from people without due process of law and act completely outside the standards of human decency. I never thought I would have a shred of sympathy for the likes of Al Sharpton, until now.

A "fishing expedition" this may be, however an inquiry is long overdue...

Polite New Yorker:
coming from family and friends of federal agents mainly in the treasury dept. nothing could be further from the truth. pay your taxes and guess what? you'll be left alone.

nothing could have made my day any better than to hear that this racist pig, al sharpton, is under a federal tax evasion and fraud probe...

I hate the IRS so much I hope he gets off scott free.

Was he set to endorse Obama? My guess is a Clinton-backed conspiracy here...

Rev. Al's going to make an endorsement?
Gee, who do you think it will be?

Where does this guy get his money from anyway? Does he have a paying job?

or actually, I wouldn't rule out a Repuke-based operation here to discredit (??) Sharpton as a preemptive measure should he decide to endorse Hillary...

^ Exactly. The fat bastard seems to eat real well and dress in ugly-yet expensive clothes. What is his job? Where does his paycheck come from? Unfortunately for the black community, Rev Al is in it for Rev Al, not the community. It's time that a REAL black leader steps up, not a race-baiting piece of shit.

i just hope reverend al will assemble a march in support of reverend al.

Al Sharpton is to Martin Luther King like Barry Bonds is to Hank Aaron.

Throwing this clown in jail would be the best Christmas present ever.

Ah...this post just made the days of 70% of gothamist commenters.

Let the angry mob form...

And btw, I'm not a big fan of Big AL either, but the hissyfits some of you all throw anytime he is mentioned is comical.

i despise that man so much...

As for Rev. Al's income, he has a radio talk show and has done commercials in the past. Wikipedia is only a click away.

I don't like al sharpton. But he means a lot to a lot of people, and he did do some good for people who really needed it at a time when they were being mostly ignored. Say what you want about the guy, but he was there when people needed him. He may be opportunistic, and even a bit racist. But, he's still a better person than most regardless.

I just hope he's not suffering a Billy Joel. Trusting your finances to another person, is a dangerous thing to do.

Wikipedia is always an accurate unbiased source. Especially for controversial figures.

You're right, but it's a great starting point and contains links to primary sources, such as Radio One's website, which prominently advertises "Keeping it Real with Rev. Al Sharpton".

Okay, I admit it.. it took two clicks.

(hopefully this isn't a dupe post..)

I neither love nor hate the Rev. Al, I just consider another entertaining part of New York. Like the guy who wears the donkey costume on the subway and sings 'Feliz Navidad'. I think NYC would be a much less enjoyable place without him.

al sharpton is to black people like david duke is to white people.

both are extreme racists.

where's al sharpton?

coming from family and friends of federal agents mainly in the treasury dept. nothing could be further from the truth. pay your taxes and guess what? you'll be left alone.

1.Your friends and family can go fuck themselves.
2.There is no law that forces anyone to pay income tax. The IRS is a terrorist organization.

Where does this guy get his money from anyway?

Poor saps who pay him to show up and "support" them.

Sharpton is a sick evil racist using the down trodden to NOT further the cause he espouses but to put money into his pocket.
Would Martin Luther King appove of what is happening with Sharpton and his brethern??
I doubt it.
My tax money whether from a white, hispanic or black is going into his pocket and he should go to prison for a long time as this has been happening for a long time.

Ummm, actually, there are laws that require people to pay taxes. Moneda, please change your tax protesting ways.

God Bless You Rev. Al Sharpton
Loved you on Girlfriends, you told it like it is.
Same goes for Charles Barkley for his comment tonight on inside the NBA.

At least Don Imus had someone to sue. Who is Rev. Al gonna sue? His "tax preparer"? The H and R Block at the Wal-Mart in Jena Louisiana never completed his 1040EZ.They kept asking for a W2 and all they got was recept from Burger King.

When someone manages to find a law they can quote that says I must pay income tax, I'll think about it.
