An opening for the new 2nd Avenue Deli is in sight! This week, they've been putting the final touches on the new Murray Hill location, but today Gothamist stopped by for a quick preview of the legendary deli. During the friends and family only preview, they don't have a their full 5-page menu ready yet, but they did have the classic items including matzah ball soup, pastrami and tuna sandwiches. One new item is the "chocolate shot" that will be served to diners at the end of the meal. The original 2nd Avenue Deli closed in March, 2006.
The new location, on 33rd Street near 3rd Avenue, will be open 24-hours a day starting Monday with a ceremonial salami cutting of "nickel shtikel" links at 11 a.m.

freddyhere - i was told that they have the same people in the back, at the counters, and most of the waiters are the same. i think they just added some new members to the wait staff.

I had a pal once who took a meatball sub and a tuna sub, both footlongs, and mashed them together and ate them. When you're hungry anything can happen. So beware 2nd av noshers, this guy's headed your way.

#19 - The Chinamen is not the issue here Dude. The question everyone wants to know is will Ester be back?!?
As she would say while preparing your soup: "You be the richer ("ri-cha") and I'll be the pourer ("pou-rha").
freddyhere
I love the ethnic smorgasbord they have with the staff - have they retained the same Chinese waitpersons..?

Is there anything nutritionally redeeming about chopped liver...

The Yiddish Walk of fame is still in front of the old location which is now an evil Chase bank that nobody would care if it went out of business.
I thankfully was a vegetarian before they closed, but it is good to see they are back.
Joclyn
But what of the Yiddish Walk of Fame?

fan7tasy- it isn't really over priced, just more expensive than you might think at first, but very well worth it. Plus it's the best pastrami in the nation, better than Katz's!!! I've waited 2 years for it to re-open.
Pastrami with tuna actually sounds good, ya know, albeit to a hard core pastrami bum it might sound a little "off".
fan7tasy
I think it's overpriced.
matty
have you considered google syndication might be hanging up the page loads?
HughGass
overpriced cold cuts. it's quite overrated you know.
Jen Chung
Matty, we're not shooting you - it's just that I've been contemplating it all afternoon, Jake's been trying to tell me to lighten up, and then I punch him in the face.
matty
I'd probably feel better if i could eat at that place. looks delicious. even still. don't shoot the messenger re: loading pages.
