Openings Roundup

120707haru.jpgHaru: The Japanese mini-chain’s takeover of New York is proceeding according to plan with the opening of their latest location in the financial district. The elegant, bi-level space (pictured) is located in the landmark 1903 Beaver Building, which calls to mind a mini-Flatiron Building. This location features two floors of dining to accommodate 160 guests, a 17 seat sushi bar, a second “alcohol” bar and two private party rooms. Like the other Harus, the extensive menu boasts a large selection of Ceviches, Carpaccios, Tartars, Sushi and Sashimi (the freshest fish in town), as well as some premium artisanal sakes and specialty cocktails like the Green Tea Margarita. Pop Burger: The new Pop Burger location in midtown is as massive as the burgers are compact. With his original location all the rage in the Meatpacking district, owner Roy Liebenthal felt confident shooting the works by building an awe-inspiring temple to the tiny burger. On the first floor is where you pick up your take out. The second floor is where you inhale your burgers in a comfortable bar and lounge. And on the third floor you do more of the same, plus shoot pool. (Eater has juicy pics.) The menu mimics the original, with dishes like the lobster "club" sandwich and cocktails that include the “Pearmiscuous”, made of pear vodka, lime, cointreau and champagne. 14 E 58th St. between Fifth and Madison Aves (212-991-6644)

Tre: Guido Venitucci and Gino Piscopo, in addition to having the most unequivocally Italian names possible, are the successful owners of Nero, Bastardo, and now Tre, another new Italian restaurant on the Lower East Side, across the street from Max Fish. The tables are bamboo, the beams are exposed and the menu, by Nero’s Giuliano Matarese, mixes things up with Spanish and Asian-inflected cuisine, like rice balls stuffed with zucchini and mint. We’ve got our eyes on the less flashy penne with butternut squash, gorgonzola cheese and arugula. On Sundays $17 will get you a two-hour, all you can drink Champagne brunch. 173 Ludlow, 212-353-3353.

Peter’s Since 1969: Billyburgers hankering for some rotisserie chicken can get their fix at this newly opened, ironically named restaurant on Bedford Ave. Israeli-born, French trained chef Omri Magal keeps it simple with one-style of herb-marinated rotisserie chicken. A variety of sausage and beef stews round out the menu, along with comfort-food sides like Macaroni & Cheese and cornbread. (For drinks, you’re encouraged to BYOB.) The restaurant aims for a classic feel with black and white tiled walls, antique light fixtures, a marble counter and original meat hooks left over from the previous tenant, B & B Meat Market, which was owned by the eponymous Peter. 168 Bedford Avenue, (718) 388-2811.

Muji Sucks! Overpriced crap made in china. You can get better design at Target and Ikea. Uniqlo is okay but too basic and not enough cutting edge fashion. Haru doesn't look like anything special. I find today's NY hipsters to be more innovative than today's Exotic Japanese.
