Lion's Den Becomes Sullivan Hall in '08

The Lion's Den, which has hosted everyone from Ben Folds to jamband fan-faves Disco Biscuits since they opened in 1990 -- will be shutting their doors at the end of the year. And come January 2nd, they'll reopen...as a 345 capacity venue called Sullivan Hall. (Fear not explorers, the secret passageway to The Sullivan Room will most likely still be intact.)

Why change the name? Maybe they want to leave their dank past behind, after all -- the joint is all shiny and new now. The venue tells us that the renovations, which were done in July during a 3 week closing, include "an extra acoustic treatment and lighting changes." Don't expect too many changes though, you'll still be able to catch the same types of acts (a glance at their January calendar shows sets from Lee "Scratch" Perry's Backing Band and a Pearl Jam cover band called Evenflow). We're told "in a sense it is under new management, there is a new partner involved however, CEG, Inc. still runs and promotes the shows. We will host the same genre of bands, however, you will be seeing higher caliber acts rolling through as well as more of a variety of musical nights."

Opening Sullivan Hall is Marco Benevento, who will have a 5-night residency with lots of special guests.

I understand the need for Gothamist to bring in money via advertising but I think today's themeing of the page goes a little too far. I also don't like the "Sponsered Post" by Dewars. You have crossed the line between information and marketting. This is something one expects with sites like newsmax and drudge, not Gothamist. Just my opinion.

Lion's Den - where will all the NYU bands play?

@ JGNY - thanks for the comment. I understand our readers may be surprised by the site's format, as this is the first time Gothamist has done a full site takeover.

And back on topic, Sullivan Hall looks so shiny and clean - that'll be a memory by the second night.

The Lion's Den has a reputation as being totally cheesy, no wonder they are changing the name... but if they have the same crappy acts 99% of the time... not much will really change aside from the name.

sorry for the multiple posts - something weird was going on with the site.

"Hall" seems to be the moniker of choice lately for most new music venues. Guess it sounds classier than rock club. I'm looking forward to the openings of Monty Hall and Huntz Hall.

I don't mind the "ad takeover" as long as the price of Gothamist holds steady.

As long as you can still walk a block and go to Mamoun's for some drunk falafel after you leave, the name change means nothing!

So who is the surprise guest playing on Jan 1st? Any ideas?
