South Jersey Rock Festival to Rival Bonnaroo

The south Jersey town of Vineland – or “shithole Vtown” as some locals call it – will host a massive three-day rock festival with camping this August. The Vineland Festival will be presented in a partnership between the company that resurrected Lollapalooza in Chicago and U.K. concert promoter Melvin Benn, who has managed the Reading Festival. No acts have been announced but that hasn’t stopped promoters from setting their price: a three-day pass, which includes camping and parking, will cost about $225, bro.

The event is set to take place on 570 acres of farmland with the capacity to accommodate 80,000 concertgoers, though promoters assured the town with a straight face that the first year will be smaller in scale, with "an expected audience of 10,000 to 20,000 people." As was the case with 2003’s ill-fated Field Day festival intended for Long Island, local residents have been immediately skeptical of the announcement, despite the Vinetown mayor’s rosy prediction of “hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue for local businesses”. Some of the objections posted on the local paper’s comment board will surely be voiced when the mayor reveals more details at Vineland City Hall on December 6th:

  • How will local merchants make money from an event that so far away from any kind of shopping?
  • How will this tax our local services like our short handed police department?
  • Please remember NO RAP GROUPS so we can enjoy sometime as adults and not have the "riff raff" hanging around starting trouble!
  • My biggest concern is the traffic!
  • Can people going to this event be allowed to use the lake on the map?
The traffic complaints, xenophobia and hand-wringing about law enforcement are to be expected from small town America, but there’s a lake at the site!? Organizers are going to want to drain that most ricky-tick – nothing raises a festival’s death toll faster than a body of water, calling out to revelers across the nitrous tanks, Jäger bottles and 4-foot bongs like Davy Jones.

Guaranteed that the guy who made the Riff Raff comment was wearing a wife beater and a Mullet.

That's two hours away, that's pretty damn far. That's south of Philly. Even still, it would be nice to have one of these big rock festivals within driving distance.

If the lineup is anywhere near Lollapalooza, or, god willing, Reading, it might be worth it.

Field Day was pretty awesome despite the rain and venue change. I don't see why they didn't make another go at having one at Giant's Stadium.

chris, Giants Stadium is a mess right now. It's constant construction. They're building something called Xanadu, which is supposed to be some sort of entertainment complex of the future. Apparently, when it's done, we'll be able to go, pay $100 bucks and plug a socket into our cerebral cortex and go virtual skiing. At least, that's what I think is going to happen.

I love how rap is the only music these yokels believe brings out the riff-raff.

Idiots.

the fun little loophole is that rappers will just have to perform sans their posses and not congregate.

I count at least three different guys copping a feel in that picture.

I'd rather go to this if the lineup is any good than flying to Choachella again. Even though being in the middle of Palm Springs is much better than Southern Jersey....

now we can go to the bridge and tunnnel folks instead of them coming to us...

i'll stick to Bonnaroo... more chill down there.

i read that lolla was going to expand from chicago into a "chain" event all around the country. maybe this is what they were talking about.

How dare these suburban types object to hip-hop loving riff-raff! Don't they know that no-snitch nightclub shootings are one of the many blessings of diversity?!?

Flip flops while crowd-surfing. Genius.

I thought all the riff raff was already in NJ.

(I keed I keed)

In Soviet Russia, bridge and tunnel doesn't come to New York, New York goes to bridge & tunnel!

(strike 2)

Take my wife, please!

haha look at the guy in the bucket hat! he's so happy a got to cop a feel of a girl's ankle. or maybe he's gay and really digs her jeans.
someone got a whole palm on her va-jay-jay. she should try this the next time there's a free concert at a men's prison.

i live just outside vineland where's the concert is at now for food if people want to leave and eat there's about 25 places to eat within a 20 minute drive in any direction and the field where it's at is at the intersection of hance bridge road and sherman ave (look it up on google maps) and the so called lake which at best is just a large pond is on the side of it my biggest question about the site is in the middle of all the fields is a old abandoned insane asylum that is real freaky to be at...(i snuck in there a few months ago it's awesome) but there's no floor to some of the buildings and is completely dangerous now what are they going to do with that i don't know but traffic wize it won't be too big of a problem i figure it's near some major roads but most likely they're going to be doing a shuttle service from other farm fields that area is completely surrounded by farm land and from that time of the year they'll be growing mint if anyone wants to make mojito's that's the best i can think vineland is the largest landmass city in new jersey and for anyone who has never been there but it's mainly farmland and one more thing in south jersey let me clue you in it's not like the stereotype persona of jersey like up north outside new york screw them we hate them they make us look bad it's a very calm area very quiet and also except for the people who live right next to the field almost everyone is thrilled about this i'm going to the meeting tomorrow at the city hall to find out more but i think this is a good place for a festival it was supposed to go to philly but they took too long and trust me if it went there the traffic would've been even worse and not too mention the violence.....almost 300 people killed this year i think

I am about to give you your best info on the site and the area, please read everything I say. I have lived in/explored and experienced the entire area we are discussing for all my life, nearly 40 years. I live very close to this site. For 8 years,I lived less than 1 mile from the site, now only six miles away I built another house. First I will say that everyone who has responded so far has no idea that this area is perfect for the event. This is not North Jersey, far from it. It is rural but so close to many desirable destinations. It is only 45 minutes from Philly or Atlantic City. Less than 1 hour from Wildwood, which a lot of people are not familiar with. Also, people should look to Millville (not Vineland) as the closest downtown and restaurant/shopping district, less than 3 miles away. Millville is recognized as one of the most improved/developed cities in our state. The downtown is now an Arts District with shops ranging from Modern Art to Tattoo Parlors. It has great restaurants and very desirable upscale bars. It also has the newest, most desirable shopping and restaurants in the county. Research "Millville NJ" and you will find this to be true. Now for the site. The site was not an Insane Asylum, it was actually a mental institution for the most severe mental patients. It is a beautiful property with amazing old buildings. The lake which sits on the property is pristine, I would dare to say the public has never been legaly near it. All of my youth we would (sneak) walk a mile through the woods to fish this lake ( Menantico Lake -very small for a lake) It is unpolluted and appears untouched. I truly hope everyone is kept away from the entire lake area. The waterway feeds ponds in a downstream game reserve in which the waters are crystal clear for 20 feet(Menantico Ponds). The state record Largemouth Bass came from those ponds. Another unknown plus is that Millville is opening a Motorsports Raceway during the same week. Numerous Hotels will eventually be built and thousands of people will visit this site also. Remember, look at "Millville" when researching the area. Now for a slightly personal opinionated view, I need to tell everyone several things. Please continue to read and also reply. I myself and many will welcome the opportunity to show our county to everyone. I dislike the traffic and growth I have seen since I began to drive. Yet I understand and accept it. I also know that our businesses will also. I simply hope and pray that MOST will find and maintain respect for our land. This part of New Jersey is very unknown for what it has to offer. I worry about pollution and trash in our waterways. I am confident that the majority will respect the area and do their part. Yet as we all know, many will not. I only ask that all of us who have values and respect will remind anyone we see not exibiting the same will speak out to them. The words of yourselves will speak volumes to others when you visit. I am sure that anyone, any group of persons who attends will find the area to be much more than expected. Let just all of us who enjoy it make it go as well as possible so it may continue. I now live as I said only six miles away, adjacent to nearly 25,000 acres of state protected land. Peaslee Wildlife Management Area. Anyone seeking a close area for campers may feel free to contact me. Myself and neighbor will assist anyone who can exibit and respect the area we may offer to you. Should anyone want further information on our area or the site, please contact me at: matthewnichols@verizon.net Please enjoy yourselves here, respect our lands and appreciate the hospitality you will receive..
