Last week, the Daily News trumpeted the plight of Amarjit Singh. Singh was injured after a mentally disturbed man's stabbing rampage on Second Avenue in October, and hasn't worked since the incident.
Lee Coleman stormed into the kitchen of the Texas BBQ Smokehouse, where Singh worked as a chef, and grabbed a bunch of knives. Singh tried to stop him, but Coleman ended up slashing his left side, almost taking off his ear. In spite of his injuries, Singh helped comfort a woman that Coleman butchered on the street. The restaurant closed, leaving Singh without his $700/week job and without a way to send his four children in India the usual $1,500/month. The incident also left him traumatized.
The Daily News started a collection for Singh after readers were moved by his story - and 247 people have donated over $15,000. The News reports, "The donations ranged from $1 to a whopping $5,000 sent by a family-run foundation." A woman from the Bronx wrote, "Please accept this small gift in appreciation of your good heart. We need more people like you."
The News is still accepting money on behalf of Singh; checks can be mailed to: Daily News Amarjit Singh Fund, GPO, P.O. Box 3307, New York, N.Y. 10116.

This makes me proud to be a New Yorker. There is still good in the world.
where's al sharpton? why can't he donate some of his millions? or "the donald?" or bloomberg himself; an anonymous donation?
it scares me that there are so many millionaires and billionaires in this great city with so little compassion.
edEx- I agree with you wholeheartedly, but enough with Al Sharpton already. What about Leona Helmsley's dog? Selfish bitch.
Why are we not doing anything to get the mentally ill off the streets?

how about just adequate care? and maybe addressing mental illness as a true handicap that deserves honest treatment and not just dismissal with prescriptions and institutions. wait, i forgot, people are too busy watching 'dancing with the stars'.
