A tour trying to turn left onto Broome Street from Bowery struck a 76-year-old woman yesterday morning. The bus, operated by Skyliner, was on its way to Atlantic City.
The woman had been walking south on Bowery with her son when the bus hit her. Witnesses said the woman was hit hard by the bus, flying 15 feet. One witness told the Daily News, "I guess she wasn't paying attention." Maybe - but buses (one report says it was a double-decker bus) do have blind spots.
The woman is in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital. The driver was not charged and remained at the scene; the Post reports the bus's driver got out to help the woman and others "gave up their jackets to use as a pillow."
The Department of Transportation lists restricted streets and prohibited drop-off/pick-up areas for charter buses.

Isn't it law that pedestrians have right of way in NYC and that drivers are responsible for any harm they cause?
We all see these buses go speeding around turns and bulling through pedestrian traffic, so why aren't the drivers who hit people being arrested?
You should know by now that laws are selectively enforced by the NYPD. The law about pedestrians rights is one of those rarely enforced. It's just too much trouble for the NYPD to investigate these cases - and there's rarely any kind of objection or follow-up.
Even the quote by the witness in the article above implies that it was the fault of the pedestrian. So move along, nothing to see there, just another fallen pedestrian in the streets of NYC.
Pedestrians only have the right of way on crosswalks; and I'm assuming, only when they have a walk signal or allowed to go because of a stop sign.

Yes, way too many drivers disregard right of way laws for pedestrians in crosswalks but NYC pedestrians are just as bad in crossing the street wherever and whenever they want and expecting cars to stop for them.
I know tour buses are allowed on side streets, but the idea of a double-decker turning onto a smaller street like Broome makes me very nervous.
15 feet? Thats like get hit from the three point line to the basket.
