Last Night's Action: Only the Score Counts

  • Stars 3, Rangers 2: What good is outshooting the opponent 41-18 if it doesn't lead to a win? That's what the Rangers have to ask themselves after Sunday's disappointing loss to the Stars. No matter how this game is measured -- except for the score that is -- the Rangers appeared to outplay the Stars. Mike Smith repeatedly stifled the Blueshirts' attack, however, and goals from Jaromir Jagr and Brendan Shanahan didn't end up as enough. For a team with as good finishers as the Rangers have, these games should be few and far and between.

  • Nets 102, Lakers 100: The Nets are now at .500, after winning their third straight game in Los Angeles. They managed the win by "holding" Kobe Bryant -- who missed a critical free throw late -- to 31 points; Richard Jefferson led the Nets with 27 points and Vince Carter had 19 off the bench. This was a good finish to a lonely West Coast trip over a long holiday weekend.
  • Eli Manning and the Giants haven't done that much to persuade their fans that another second-half meltdown isn't in store. Manning threw four interceptions -- three of which were returned for touchdowns -- during Minnesota's 41-17 thrashing of the Giants. More on this game later.
