- Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a water rescue at Atlantic Beach Bridge in Queens, a fall victim onto the train tracks at West 42nd St. and 9th Ave. in Manhattan, and a car in the water on Bay and Edgewater Sts. in Staten Island.
- He didn't have to be shot in the back with a shotgun! Dick Cheney's heart problems continue. Seriously though, best wishes.
- Gov. Elliot Spitzer is going to be sequestered in a Brooklyn Marriott this weekend to hear it from fellow Democratic lawmakers. He'll eventually issue a mea culpa for resembling the party's mascot too closely and the Democrats will try to move on from there.
- "Wii. We need a Wii and world peace, but I'll take a Wii," said Mxxxxxxx Fxxxxx, 43, of Staten Island as she and her two daughters scoured Times Square stores for the red-hot Nintendo video-game console."
- Yep, immigrants are a drag on the economy: "In the suburbs north and east of the city, about 4 of every 10 doctors and more than one-fourth of college professors were foreign-born."
- "SELF" Magazine rated Long Island the second-healthiest region in the country. New York women ranked 8th in the 2nd annual ranking.
- Things to bring to a party: cake, wine, and not a knife to stick in your host's neck. The latter was the choice of one party guest, who surprised her friend with a sharp knife and a quick death.
- Brooke Astor's son Anthony and his attorney have been asked to surrender themselves on criminal charges.

Immigrants aren't causing a problem, illegal immigrants are causing a problem. Get it straight.
I'm no bleeding heart liberal (in fact I'm a registered Republican waiting at this very moment for my venison - stalked, shot, eviscerated and butchered by yours truly - to defrost so I can eat dinner) but even I would be tempted to put something opposite in spirit from "best wishes" after that note about Dick Cheney.
Jeez, the guy's in the hospital with heart problems; I figure it's worth it to wish him good health, whether I disagree or agree with him. I certainly hope the last conversation I have with a friend, enemy, or loved one doesn't involves policy issues.
Let karma settle that, shall we?
if this country had any conscience the vp would be recieving medical treatment in prison for destroying one country and irrevocably damaging our own - certainly no one would be wishing him well...and tens of thousands of dead civilian is not a policy issue, its a war crime. Wake up - please.
Best wishes? You've got to be kidding. F**k Dick Cheney.
The Atlantic Beach Bridge is in Nassau County.
Ease up, guys. Cheney didn't "irrevocably" damage this country. It's strong and resilient. It may take a few years, maybe a few decades, maybe even the rest of your lifetime, but it will survive and recover. Although it still baffles me how a heartless SOB can have heart problems. You don't see Rumsfeld, Rove, Rush or O'Reilly complaining about heart problems.
"Mxxxxxxx Fxxxxx"?
What about the cancer clusters in Long Island?
I don't think anyone ever suggested legal immigrants were a drag on the economy, but nice flame-bait.
If nobody is suggesting that, then the quote:
is misleading. What's with the anonymity of the Wii consumer?
