Openings Roundup

open-sign.jpgThe Smith: Believe it or not, the The Smith is housed in the spot that used to be a Pizzeria Uno. Virtually anything would be an upgrade. The owners of Jane and the Neptune Room, Glenn Harris and Jeffrey Lefcourt, brought the executive chef from Jane, Brian Ellis to create a hearty, seasonal, American bistro-style menu, with offerings like lamb schnitzel with parmesan crust, hot potato chips with gorgonzola fondue, and steak served in various cuts with a choice of sauces. And to top it off, they've got a photo booth. 55 3rd Avenue between 10th and 11th Streets, 212-420-9800.

Solex: Frederick Twomey has conquered Italy with Bar Veloce, Spain with Bar Carrera, and has now taken on France, with his newest sleek, stylized wine bar/restaurant. With partner Christophe Chatron-Michaud and Chef Eric Hubert he is taking advantage of his first location with a full kitchen. In addition to charcuterie and des fromages, the rustic French menu selections include quiches, savory tarts, and a delicious "éclair Wellington," a savory éclair filled with filet and mushroom duxelle. The souffles are also top notch, both sweet and savory, and the experience is rounded out with an all-French wine list featuring over 20 offerings by the glass. 103 First Avenue, between 6th and 7th Streets, 212-777-6677.

Cooper's Tavern: As part of the New Yorker Hotel's recent makeover, this restaurant, bar, and lounge still keeps the art deco feel of the hotel's decor. Owners of the Tick Tock Diner pair cup with Chef Julian Clauss-Ehlers to bring comfort to the table with a menu that includes a burger made with beef from the famed Pat LaFrieda. 481 Eighth Avenue at 35th Street, 212-268-8460.
