The new trailer for Cloverfield (the JJ Abrams movie due out in January) has been released, and only proves a tad more revealing than the first. With a giant monster destroying New York City, this movie will certainly be for those who like "destruction porn," because nothing really beats the Statue of Liberty being decapitated...
Abrams turned the Lower East Side into a war zone earlier this year, but he's been hush-hush about any details surrounding the project. Looks like everyone will see their neighborhood in shambles though, as much of New York seems to be covered -- it even begins on a future date in Coney Island, and the main characters make it all the way up to incident site U.S. 447 (the area formerly known as Central Park...creepy!).
Catch the trailer before all screenings of Beowulf except the IMAX. (The preview for Omega Man-do-over I Am Legend is currently screening in IMAX.) Below is a photo from the film (we're guessing the subway had delays) and a drawing of what the Cloverfield monster may look like (hey, that hipster is as tall as Lady Liberty!).

What a cute monster. I hope it wins.
Thanks for the headline. I am totally sick and tired of seeing NYC get destroyed in every TV show and movie. Especially now with every psycho terrorist in the world trying to get their hands on a nuke to actually do the real thing.
JJ Abrams is a genius. but i thought the preview was before Beowulf in regular theatres and NOT the imax. is that wrong?
Corrected; thanks Blue Monday. (I provided Jen with that inaccurate info.)
Yuck! Looks like a huge crab...and I don't mean the ones we eat from the ocean.
I, on the other hand, love every time I see NYC get destroyed in every TV show and movie. From those dudes making that wrecked Manhattan landscape in their apartment to this trailer.
I didn't mind it before 9/11. But now that it seems like it might actually happen some day, I can't take it any more. Can't they destroy some other city?
I'm glad I'm not the only one bothered by the ubiquitous "blow up NYC" shit. Especially with the blair witch sort of "faux-real" look this seems to have, I think it's pretty fucking tasteless to play on everyone's obvious emotions like that. Can't we blow up LA? No one likes that hellhole.
Nice work with the DISINFORMATION Del Signore! I just got back from an utterly DISAPPOINTING trip up to the IMAX Lincoln Square IN THE RAIN!!! Your correction was TOO little TOO late - there is in fact NO Cloverfield preview in IMAX! ARGHGH!!! I'll expect you to post your mailing address in the comments so I can send Gothamist an invoice for the obscene cost of my IMAX ticket, subway fare, X-Large Pepsi, popcorn, Sour Patch kids, etc!!!
Cthulhu lives!
I'm still waiting on the film version of Scott McCloud's DESTROY!! comic.

they would've been the coolest godzilla movie - i hope the monster looks good
Why do film makers feel the need to decapitate one of our important symbols of freedom....its also been done already....lack of creativity shows.
