Last Night's Action: Isles Keep Upper Hand

  • Islanders 2, Rangers 1: For all the success the Rangers have had against the rest of the league, they still can't solve the Islanders. Five-game winning streak? Poof! Rick DiPietro made 18 saves and the Islanders won for the third time in three games between the two clubs. Ruslan Fedotenko and Josef Vasicek each scored in the second period, and Michal Rozsival scored a short-handed goal for the Rangers. He now has seven goals through 21 games. He had 10 last season.

The Isles' success bodes well. They're only three points adrift of the Rangers, and they have four games in hand. Even if the Blueshirts do find a way to take down their rivals, it could be a local battle in the Atlantic division. The Islanders play Montreal on Wednesday, and the Rangers visit Tampa Bay a half-hour later. Both will be home -- and off -- on the holiday.

  • Jazz 102, Nets 75:Jason Kidd and the Nets got a first-hand look at the future premier point guard in the NBA. His name is Deron Williams, and he scored 20 points -- on 8-of-11 shooting -- as Utah cruised over New Jersey. The Nets have lost six straight games, and though they haven't been playing cupcakes, their inability to stay in striking distance during the losing streak has got to be concerning.

Rangers will be on the road Wednesday.

Another great game in the Isles-Rangers rivalry. Liked the intensity (and being an Isles fan, like the outcome). Pretty tough gaem all around, and Avery surely did his dirty work in getting under the Isles skin (see: DP's penalty, where he actually hit his teammate in the back, insted of Avery in the head as intended). DP's emotions got the best of him, and he still prevailed.

Would have liked to have seen the Campoli-Staal fight happen at the end of the 1st period.

the Rangers had a 5-game winning streak
