NY1 Reporter Sorry For Pranking Station

“So which is the real Bernie Kerik? Is it the one who pleads not guilty before or is it the one who pleads guilty after he cuts a deal that he’s comfortable with?” - NY1 caller Dalton, from the Upper East Side, to "The Call"

Those were the questions that cost NY1 reporter Gary Anthony Ramsay his job, after calling into his own station under a false name. The station deemed it an exceptionally poor judgment and fired the reporter (though they told the Daily News that Ramsay left to pursue other opportunities). From the New York Times:

Mr. Ramsay said he was at his Upper West Side home watching the program, when he became frustrated with some viewers’ comments, including those who said they believed that supporters of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton had a role in the investigation.
It turns out the host of The Call, John Schiumo, called Ramsay afterwards to say he recognized his voice! Ramsay says he apologized and admitted that it was a bad idea to call in under a false name, but that they would have been completely acceptable in a different forum. Ultimately, he said, "I am continually apologetic for smudging that journalistic line, but I’m a human being, and I’m subject to the same frailties.”

Ramsay was fired after 15 years at the station. The departure wasn't that abrupt - he was scheduled to leave the station because his contract ran out in the summer. Last year, a co-worker accused him of sexual harassment.

You've run this story (with the same photo) already:

Is there anything new here? Ramsay's sorry? I'm sure he is.

We ran this because now it includes what he said during The Call and his thoughts.

I, for one, appreciate the follow up. Now, if we can get some video.

he's right. have you ever listened to the callers on that show?
it appears the station only hires whiners and staten islanders.

I, for one, welcome our new GAR overlords.

The Call sucks. Ultimately this may be the best thing for Ramsay -- he's an NY1 lifer, long after most of his old colleagues have gone on to bigger and better things. The only person who's faired worse at NY1 than him is probably Adele Sammarco, who once claimed that Ramsay attacked her:

Of course he's sorry: they fired him.

I'd be sorry for rescuing a drowning kitten if I was fired for it.

"The Call" is a like a popularity contest.
Has Howard Stern Fans flooded it yet??

my god, you're right. you got the nerd host and the hottie redhead/blond in another frame.
elizabeth kaladen didn't fare well, she was replaced in her network gig by a friend of couric.

I'm just amazed that somebody was watching "The Call" other than the typical lunatics and cranks I've heard call in there.

I wish he'd take the Fox News wannabe Kristen Shaughnessy with him. I liked him as a telepromter reader and don't think he deserves to be let go for trying to avoid showing any kind of bias. I mean, his comment was pretty mild.

And I appreciate the follow-up post because I was really curious as to what he said. That wasn't so much a prank call, but an attempt to remain anonymous. Not like he repeated "Baba Booey" over and over.

So the lesson of the day is to disguise your voice when you call your co-worker on the air. And don't use your own phone that they can pick up on caller ID, although he probably did that one right.

This all just reeks of racism! Where mah man Rev Al be at...?

Too bad for GAR, agreed, Murray Hillster. It would be truly great if Kristen Shaughnessy left for any reason. Her voice, her tragically mindless 'In the Papers', and her voice (!), are all way too much.

Perhaps she should be encouraged to repeat 'Baba Booey' over and over.

I love Kristen. She just needs to tone down the pink thing. Try another color.

what's the big deal? everyone knows kerick is a (insert explicative of choice here). the question he raised wasn't even offensive. i think it's hilarious that ramsy did that and it shows true loyalship to the company for Ramsy to watch and participate in other NY1 programs. why, with the addition of Ramsy, The Call must have had a total of 3 viewers that night.
