NYC & Co better update their marketing materials, because New York City has a new name...The Big Onion. At least that's what Stephon Marbury is calling New York these days. While professing his love of yesterday's NY Post cover (we can't argue with him), Marbury e-mailed The Post, "I must say the front page of The Post has to be the funniest thing I have ever seen in a long time. I'm sitting on the plane laughing. You have to love New York. The big onion will either make you laugh or make you cry." Uh huh. Maybe his giant basketball-player-sized fingers couldn't type correctly on his phone. Nevermind that typing o-n-i-o-n is nowhere near a-p-p-l-e. One thing's for sure, Marbury has as many layers as an onion.
While in town on his 1-day absence from the Knicks, Marbury paid his respects to the family of his former coach Robert Williams, after learning that he passed away Tuesday. Williams, known as Mr. Lou, was a mentor and coach to countless kids, including Marbury and Sebastian Telfair in Coney Island who played basketball on the court near his apartment building in Surfside Gardens. One former player said that Mr. Lou was "the backbone of this whole community." Marbury was able to view Williams' body, where he was, by one account, "crying like a baby." A memorial service for Williams will be held tomorrow in Coney Island.

Before it was known as the Big Apple, NYC's nickname was the Big Onion.
What an ungrateful former thug slash drug dealer...
would it be heartless of me to say that I don't
give a rat's ass to both stories?
then I'll see you guys in you know where.
This dude is a fruit. He's so fucking looney it's unbelievable. I remember watching the Bruce Beck interview live and I was like "what the fuck? is this for real?" the funny thing is that he had his own talk show on MSG and it was horrible. How any man can be worse than Magic Johnson is incredible. Have you noticed that MSG hires the worst english speakers in the world. First Isiah Thomas, then Marbury and then Kenny "the Jet" smith. It's so confusing on Kenny Smith's part cause he's pretty lucid and well spoken on Inside the NBA with Charles Barkley but he's an awful color commentator on MSG. How the hell can these Black men be worse than Clyde Frazier who was educated half a decade ago.
NYC is smelly...I would call it an onion!
It's true, NYC was know as the big onion before it was called the big apple. As much as marbury is an idiot on the court , he just schooled gothamist.
I think he would make a fine spokesperson for the NAACP...
As far as google searches show, the LES was called the big onion not the entire city.
Also the Big Onion is listed as a nickname for Chicago.. and this guy searched the NYT and found no historical mention of Big Onion.

i'm going with politburo on this one.
and (not that you can say wiki is completely accurate), but the big onion is listed as a nickname for chicago.
lastly, even if it is a nickname for nyc, i don't think stephon meant it like that.
While not generally being a starbury supporter, I gotta say that this was actually a more witty comment than you guys are giving him credit for.
Whether you believe NY's former nickname was the big onion or not, it is at least recognized by some as a former nickname (http://www.bigonion.com/). if correct- good use of history, if false- at least he is not alone in this misconception.
Then if you dissect what he said following that comment. "..it will either make you laugh or make you cry."
Inserting big apple before hand doesn't work for his double entendre.
The big onion-standing not only for the city of NY but also the veggie that makes people who cut it cry.
So, basically he is outsmarting all of you who are making fun of how stupid he is. For those of you who don't recognize what I just brought up, that is called irony.
I'm sure Marbury knew that, that's why he loves playing for the New Amsterdam Knicks.
Onions make people laugh?
Yeah, OK. Anyone wanna vote on whether Stephon was making an ironic and witty statement or was just showing the effects of his Lincoln High School "education?"
I say Lincoln.
Two nobel prize winner in chemisty and one in medicine maybe were also just showing the effects of their LHS "education" too.
Authors Arther Miller and Joseph Heller somehow managed to find success with a Lincoln "education". Maybe Marbury shared their same english teacher.
ok, not likely he was being ironic (although i was pointing out that the comments on this blog were)... just not as dumb as we're giving him credit for.
P.S. no, onions don't make people laugh...
